I went to two stores looking for butter beans.  I didn't see a one.  Finally, I googled it and found out that they are a small or 'baby' version of Lima Beans!  What???!!!???    I could have bought THOSE...  My dh wanted the 'mashed potatoes for our holiday lunch but I thought we'd have to special order the beans, like the corn thins.  Whoops!  Can you believe it?  We could have had those 'potatoes'.

AnnieR,

There are two common varieties of lima beans, the baby lima beans and the fordhook. But don't confuse them in the different stages of development. The fordhook is larger and lighter in color, and has a stronger taste than the baby lima, it is not a grown up baby, it is a separate variety. In the south it is the fordhook lima beans that are commonly called butter beans.

I was reading about that on a couple of websites when I googled the butter beans.

I got a big chuckle over the Lima Beans/Butter Beans relationship--- especially the part about being known as Butter Beans in the South.
I've lived here in Florida for 24 years and have never heard of butter beans.  Apparently, Publix and Albertsons haven't heard about them either.  They had baby limas and calico beans... which I guess that I should have bought.    Whoops!

I did buy Cannellini Beans (white kidney beans) and Judias (great northern beans) in case they were AKA butter beans....  I'm sure that I'll find some great uses for these beans, since we love beans sooooo much now.

That's really good to hear, Tina!
I like the black beans and make a lovely close to fat free soup with it; but the rest of the beans will take some getting used to....  Thanks for the encouragement!

I posted this on another thread but I found the butter beans - not in the bean section of the store - but in the canned vegetable section right next to the canned corn. It was in Walmart. I am going to check our Albertsons and see if they are in the same section.

My husband wondered what they were so I told him to get a can out of the pantry. On the can it actually says "The vegetable with more" so my husband is convinced that butter beans are vegetables not beans. ????
