Exercise question
Hi,
I understand this website is all about proper eating and the LDL eating plan, but I was wondering if anyone is exercising. I didn't see a category for it anywhere. I have a thyroid that doesn't work at all and my doc told me it would take 3 or 4 months to regulate it with the meds she put me on. She told me I'd have more trouble with losing weight than most people because of it. I actually enjoy exercising, and was recently given the okay to start again (had a mild heart attack last year do to a weakened heart during pregnancy). I love to walk, and have started walking with my kids at night, and I have a mini-tramp that I enjoy jogging on in the house while watching TV (easy on the joints). I also just picked up a yoga basics book at the used book store because I'm very tense and tight - can barely bend over and can barely reach my calves. I thought the yoga (in a very basic form) would help me to become a bit more flexible. I enjoy aerobics too and so I recorded a few general low-impact ones to work on from the TV. We have a weight machine in the home, but I'm not very good at keeping up with that. lol.
I know it is a personal question, but I was just curious if everyone is changing eating habits only, or combining it with exercise.

Re: Exercise question
Hi Gretchen,
As you may have read in other posts, this is my second trip on the train to skinnytown. The first time I lost 85 pounds. The only reason I mention this is because I lost all of that weight without the first stitch of exercise.
I gained all of the weight back because I started eating the old way again to deal with stress. I look back on that reasoning now and laugh. I wasn't dealing with anything. I was medicating my way through with food. BAD choice.
Anyway, this time around I'm doing a little walking and as soon as I am able (I have over 200 pounds to lose again) I will be doing some other exercises. What I'm finding for me personally is that I just feel better. So I think I would still be doing the walking even if it wasn't helping with the weight loss.
I want to lose weight and get to my goal. I know that as I continue to follow LDL I will get there. But this time, it's finally sunk into my head that this is a life change for me and not some contest to get skinny and then go back to eating all the unhealthy foods again. I say if it makes you feel better and you want too, then do it. LDL really IS about making this work for you and your lifestyle.

Re: Exercise question
If you've gotten the okay from your doctors, exercise is good no matter what "diet" you are following.
It not only helps with weight loss, but it also tones up your body and help keep it firm while you lose. My suggestion would be to keep an eye on your calories, since the more you exercise the more energy your body will need.

Re: Exercise question
Has anyone else noticed that if you type a reply and try to post it at the same time someone else does, your post is lost? Or am I doing something wrong?
I wanted to say Good for you guys doing the exercise as well as LDL. Lately the most exercise I get is trying not to over exert myself while turning the page of my book.
I was up to 3 miles a day last year, but not been doing anything lately.

you don't lose it...you have to go back and look for it......the website will tell you in red that someone else has just posted on that thread asking you if you still want to post it and you just have to click "post" again....
as far as the exercise goes....don't worry about it...especially now that the nice weather is here..it'll happen....

Thanks Niki, I'm married to a computer specialist, you'd think it would rub off on me. I usually just tell him to come fix it. (I know other things)

Re: Exercise question
Hi Gretchen! I'm so glad you asked about the exercise as I was wondering the same thing. I too have a nonfunctioning thyroid so we have to go the extra mile to lose weight- not that it's easy for anyone. I do know from the experience of losing weight & getting in shape in years past, that exercise made the scale needle move much faster. So I plan on adding walking to my regime. I find it also helps clear my mind after a busy day and I sleep better.
Good luck to you - I'll be pulling for you!

the weight i lost, i lost without exercising...and, i have an underactive thyroid myself....i lost an average of 4 pounds a month, but i ate so lavishly i didn't care......i went off and gained some back...when i went back on let's do lunch, i started walking 4 miles most days and i lost weight a little quicker...i had a ticker for a while then met my goal again.....my daughter got married in march and i was ready to fit into the size 12 dress i bought(i'm thin at that size...i have a large frame)since the wedding, i've been bad and i JUST got back on let's do lunch last week..............
i love to exercise....having the energy to do it has always been the problem..................

Re: Exercise question
2 Notes here:
1) Thyroid Problems -- niki has thyroid issues too. She went through several months where she didn't lose at all. BUT she felt so good eating this way that she just kept on eating right. Gradually she lost weight too.
2) Exercise: I walk my 'broke-leg' dog, 'Reo. ("Reo broke his leg a couple of years ago; it healed crooked. I can walk 3 miles and 'Reo can only go 1/2 a mile. So I push an empty baby-stroller until he starts limping. Then I load him in and keep walking.)
lol, niki; you and I were answering at the same time...

Re: Exercise question
A few years ago and many pounds lighter, but still overweight, I was trying to prepare to walk a marathon to lose weight. I was up to five miles when I developed planter facitius (?). That ended that. Last week I was limping from a pulled muscle. I seem to do more harm to myself than good when I try to "exercise" when I am obese . I enjoy walking but I take it easy. I try to stretch frequently. As I lose weight, I will be able to do more. My desk job also restricts movement considerably. I still hope to walk that marathon one day. (Husband says, "I'm silly.")

Re: Exercise question
Hey, EnJae! I have a stroller for my dogs, too. They have such short legs & I have really long legs, and they love to go to the farmers market with me on Saturdays but it's impossible to have them on a leash & try to shop. My son thinks it's kooky, but my friends (all are dog lovers) think it's great.
I expect that my success will be slower than others because of the "dreaded dead thyroid" but I'm not going to let it discourage me (I hope). People like you should keep that from happening! Thanks!

Re: Exercise question
I oughta get a good picture taken of me, with 'Reo in the stroller, and post it! And you do the same! Well, I mean, you take a picture of YOU, with your dogs in their stroller....

Re: Exercise question
What an interesting cool job. To be able to get up every day and work at a resort on an island sounds wonderful.

Re: Exercise question
Gretchen, You inspired me to get up and walk this morning, only did about a mile~it was windy and a little chilly.
Mary, Way cool job. As for myself, I've been in the mortgage business for the last 24 years, currently unemployed. I live in California. I told my husband my current career goal is to be "The woman behind the man"

Re: Exercise question
I just started the double stroller rides with the kiddos. If it doesn't kill me I think it will help. Light weights or resistance are a good idea. If you are over 30 you begin losing muscle and it is good for your metabolism.
