So What's Eating You, DOC?

Post by Gemini the Younger »

After waiting two months for the appointment, and another two weeks for all of my diagnostic tests to be evaluated, I was finally meeting face to face with the latest in my Conga line of "bariatric specialists."

Had I not been so excited as the nurse ushered me into his office, I would have instantly known that not only were the famous Diet Doctor and me not a good match, but we would never establish a therapeutic relationship--much less a speaking one--either. The camouflage scrubs under his lab coat and the paratrooper boots were a dead giveaway that DOC thought he was a Brigadier General in the War on Fat, and I just do not play the dumb diet recruit with much conviction.

Anyway, so there I sat across from him, patiently waiting as he flipped through my chart.  Then suddenly and without warning, Dr. X bolted to his feet, shot halfway across his desk in my direction, and started shouting at me at what I'm pretty sure was the top of his voice.  His breath blasted me with such force that my earrings began twirling like windchimes, making little tinkling sounds.

"You're morbidly obese!" (Big duhh! What was your first clue?" Tell me something I don't know!  And now I am ticked.)

"Well, yes, Doctor, but only by necessity. I'm working my way through University by selling my donor collagen to the tragically thin and wrinkled." (Never mind that I'm so old I'll be dead before my student loans come due.)

"Your BMI is bigger than the national debt!"

"Ummm, before or after the Stimulus Bail Outs, Doctor?"

"Where is your Diet Journal, the one you were supposed to start two weeks before this visit?"

"Hollywood. My agent says Meryl Streep is willing to gain 100 pounds just to star as me...she says there's an Oscar in it for her."

"You need to take this SERIOUS!"

"Of course, Doctor...is it by prescription, or can I buy it over the counter?"

At least that's the way I remember our encounter. (And yes, I identify closely with Evelyn/Towanda in her famous parking space scene in Fried Green Tomatoes, so my memory of events may not be entirely accurate, but they're close enough to qualify as the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!)

Fortunately, there were no casualties during my doctor visit--well, just my singed eyebrows and a couple of dangles that fell off my earrings. And as fate would have it, when I got home, I had an email waiting from my sister, Gemini the Elder, urging me to check out the Let's Do Lunch site.  And here I am.  But I ask you, where do doctors get off treating abundant people as if we're all liars, imbeciles, undisciplened and unwashed slobs, noncompliant...  Whoops!  Sorry, I forgot myself there for a moment and started preaching to the choir.

Thanks for letting me vent (rant.) :rose:

Mary is right.  :D  We rock.

I've met both kinds of doctors in my life.  I'm very blessed right now to have a very loving and supportive doctor.  She is all about LDL too!

I just hate when that happens GEM!!!  My sleep doctor told me that the only reason I was FAT (his words) was because I ate too much and that I needed to just starve myself and walk around hungry if I wanted to be thin!!!  Told me that the fat is why I had sleep apnea.... DUH!!!  I knew that at least.  Said he walked around hungry everyday because that is the only way a person can lose weight!  A real sensitive guy who will forever be a distant memory as I plan to never see him again!

I'm sure we all have our dreaded wise doctor stories, mine was a heart specialist who when he determined my heart was healthy wondered why I thought my problem was my heart rather than the fact that I was "underconditioned"! He made me angry enough to give up donuts and fast food for at least.... an hour!  LDL to the rescue. Eljayne

Let's prove all the "weight loss experts" wrong.  They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  Haven't we all tried the "walking around hungry" thing- and just how long could we keep it up!!?  And counting points, or having our digestive system replumbed, or giving ourselves a shot each day, or eating nothing but protein, or eggs and grapefruit....  Well, success and health are the ways to measure effectiveness of a weight loss approach, and we have a winner with Let's Do Lunch!  If enough of us share our "secret" with our doctors, then they will see that there is a better way.  Pam

Hi Gem:

What a horrible experience !  Would love to join you on the day you go in there and he is rendered speechless and hopefully learns a lesson about how to treat patients.  In the meantime, have you considered writing a book ?  I read a lot of humourous literature and you are right up there with the best !

I really like that idea, Mary! I probably have at least one of every diet book written. Some more than one. I think we could hurt him really bad for inflicting pain on our GEM!  *love*

Actually though he might not be able to come out of the mountain of books!! Could be lost forever! Shame on him!!!!

We love you, GEM! You are so awesome and such a wonderful person to have as a member of this community!

Thanks for all wisdom and wit!!!

But the best thing is you have all of us, too! Those who understand...been there, done that...the whole routine. We're all in this together.
*hug* *hug* *hug* and  :kissed: :kissed: :kissed: (AKA hugs and kisses)
Phooey on the doctor! Boy, some empathy. Maybe he flunked that class! But we're here for you!  :rose:
Blessings!!

I would suspect the doc might have also flunked "nutrition" along with bedside manner...

OH MY GOSH Gem,

What an A_S --- really.  :bomb:  Don't these people have to take an oath? Don't they understand that you are coming to them for help?  He is an insensitive lout - I feel sorry for the women in his life. I am sure that same attitude is applied to them as well.

I am glad you can keep your sense of humor about it but I am sorry you had such an unpleasant experience. I will tell you about my first --- I was maybe 15 and my weight was never addressed before then.  I had to get a doctor's exam bc the school required it. Well after I stepped on the scale, my doctor said "Do you know you weigh more than me; a 6'1" man?  Well, how could I know that?  I had no idea about nutrition nor did I have any idea of what I weighed or should weigh. I was so embarrassed I wanted to crawl into a hole- instead I went silent until he finished.  He did give me an eating plan which helped me to lose some weight - at least he provided some tools.

Do you need to go back to him again?  It would be great for him to see how wonderful you are doing with LDL. *woot*  I know we can do this together ---esp. with the great love and support we receive from our little community. We all love you here. Your positive attitude is infectious!

Hi Gem,

Just wanted to share my oddest, and most uncomfortable doctor moments with you. When I was 18, at college, I went to Student Health because I had a twitching, clicking feeling  in one ear. The man had me remove my blouse and felt up my breasts. I was too young and innocent to realize maybe I should have reported him.

Fast forward to a couple of years back. My new doc came into the room and I told him I had just had a mammogram that day, and that it was normal. He responded by giving me an "ambush" breast exam, which is to say he abruptly grabbed under my blouse and roughly pushed tissue around. He didn't warn me he was going to do it. It would not have established anything about my  health, because it wasn't done right.  It was a bit humiliating, and reminded me of a sketch on the comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus," about "The Dirty Vicar."

( For those of you too young to know what I'm talking about, it was a show consisting of outrageous sketches made in the U.K. and the Vicar in question couldn't resist making a grab for women's chests on visits to their homes for tea.)

Thank goodness for the majority men in my world --such as my father, brothers and  husband-- who treat women with respect.

Meg (yourdish)
