Julie, you made me look a little harder at the hug emoticon. The smilies are facing each other. If you notice, you can see the side of the right eye of the one mainly facing in the other direction -- the first one. So the hands are behind it and not covering any eyes. You can also see a little of the right side of its mouth too.
