hi everyone...i know there are already type 2 diabetics here who are having success on let's do lunch.....even if you've posted your progress elsewhere,i would love to see your progress documented here.....
diabetes is a very serious illness IF left uncontrolled....when controlled,it is a mere nuisance....as an RN,i've done a lot of diabetic teaching in my life...with your information,i can be more effective in helping diabetics take control..................thanks for your help...niki

something i would like to discuss here is diabetic neuropathy....nerve damage is a complication of uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes.it causes numbness in the lower extremities..poor circulation combining with diminished sensation which can lead to ulcers and(sometimes VERY unfortunately)amputations...the kidneys can become damaged...your vision can be affected....the way to treat it is to control the blood sugars to STOP the progression of the damage..i personally have never seen these symptoms improve...and that is the problem for so many people...they wait too long to take this disease seriously.......
when i first started working in rehab over ten years ago,i have to say that i was very deeply disturbed at the sight of so many amputees(especially the double amputees)..i knew a man from church that had such a gusto for food that one christmas dinner i sat next to him figuring that i would know the best thing to order by watching to see what he got....we ordered prime rib and i remember ordering the dessert he ordered which was apple pie with ice cream and hot fudge...it was after that huge meal that i learned that he was a diabetic..he would just give himself a little extra insulin after eating like that...i remember one sunday at church telling him that there was a nail in his shoe..he didn't know it..he couldn't feel it......eventually he became a double amputee and then his kidneys failed and he went on dialysis....he came to the point that he told the Lord that he had had enough and he asked Him to take him home...and He did...he went home to be with the Lord last year...............
BUT THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE....the best way for a diabetic to eat is let's do lunch.....your life span will be as good as anyone else's...the quality of your life as good as anyone else's...diabetics that overload on artificial sweetener are not helping themselves.....LET'S DO LUNCH IS THE ONLY ANSWER...for someone like betty's husband who is not overweight and feels he is not prepared to stop eating the unhealthy carbs should AT LEAST switch to whole grains and should limit these as much as possible..if his blood sugars are consistently low at night,he might need to have his medication adjusted or pay closer attention to what he's eating and when......diabetics MAY have to be careful with the fruit...i usually only eat fruit once a day...so they would never have to feel that they can't do let's do lunch because they feel they can't eat that much fruit....every diabetic should experiment to see how the fruit by itself affects their blood sugars and if they need to,they can add some beans to their fruit.....
EXERCISE..some kind of exercise is SO important for a diabetic....walking is GREAT..when you exercise, the cell receptors that stop insulin from getting into the cells become more cooperative and allow the insulin in..
this post might not stay here if i see that i have offended anyone with my candidness...but from the first time someone asked me about diabetes, this has been on my heart.....if ONE person who is a diabetic reads this and takes it seriously,it will be ONE life saved....and for me,it will make this worthwhile.....................very sincerely, niki

Wow niki, thanks for sharing your heart....a few years ago I worked in Special Ed and one of the children I worked with was born diabetic and had a seizure soon after delivery.  This left him mentally challenged with limited vision and a whole host of health problems.  His family also chose to offset his sugar intake with extra insulin.  We counted every carb he ate , however at home we couldnt.  It was not unusual for him to come to school with 300+ glucose at 8 am!! The only excuse we got was he got up during the night without us hearing....I see him from time to time and think things are better with a nurse helping to care for him at home now..but this is truly a bad case of diabetes when a child is not able to understand the dangers he faces. Thanks again niki!!

Hello everyone.  I want to take a few minutes to let you know what LDL has done for me.  I am a type II diabetic and I use insulin daily.  I was concerned at first that eating all the fruit and smoothies I could hold would not be a good thing for me.  But just the opposite results have happened.  My fasting blood sugar levels that I test every morning have gone down by more than 50 points.!!!!  I now take 50 units of Lantus insulin every morning instead of 90.  I saw my doctor last week and I have also lost 20 pounds.  I eat many bananas, peaches, and frozen grapes.  I also eat a lot of pineapples. Not everyone who is diabetic may have the same results that I have had, but so far so good for me.  Because my blood sugar level is getting better by the day, I will be taking LESS insulin as the days go by.  I just can't believe what this progam has done for us all.  I started LDL in the middle of July. God is good....

Thank you, Niki, for writing this posting on diabetes.   I can tell everyone who reads this that Niki is telling you just like it is.   I know from my own husband's experiences.   He has already had some nerve damage from his diabetes not being properly managed.    His blood sugar used to drop in the night while he was sleeping.   Fortunately, God woke him when this would happen.   Finally, our primary physican sent him to a diabetes specialist.  I think his blood sugar is better managed now since he's been going to the specialist.   At least his blood sugar hasn't dropped through the floor since the specialist changed his insulin.   Still, I know my husband  has a lot of room for improvement.  Even though he isn't a big eater, he could still make better choices.   He has had diabetes for at least 20 years.    People who are naturally slim  know they can eat anything they want, all kinds of sweets, breads, all the things that are bad for us and not gain weight.    Unfortunately eating all these bad foods can bring on serious health problems.   Thank God for this program and for people like Niki who are so willing to give of their time and expertise to try and help others.

Betty

I was diagnosed with type II diabetes, over 10 years ago.  My blood sugar level was always high in the mornings.  I have tried actose, glucophage, and amaryl.  Even on the medications, my blood sugar levels in the morning were between 170 to 190.

After my first week on LDL, my morning blood sugar levels were down to around 110.  After week two I stopped taking the amaryl and my blood sugars have remained around 110.

I've become a believer in LDL as the diet for me.

hi ed............i can't tell you how happy i am to hear of your success on let's do lunch........that is absolutely phenomenal that on medication you couldn't get your blood sugars down...and now on let's do lunch your blood sugars are NORMAL and you're NOT on medication...that is so wonderful(and i am SO sincere in my happiness for you),,
i have a very strong history of diabetes in my family..add to that the fact that i was such a sweet eater and junk food eater all my life....i WAITED for someone to tell me i was a diabetic.....before i went on let's do lunch i would have been upset and i would have worked hard to deal with the changes it would mean to my life.......NOW,finding out i had diabetes would mean NOTHING to me......that's because since i'm already on let's do lunch, i wouldn't have to change my eating habits ONE IOTA............how awesome..........there's NO deprivation here........................
i would like to ask you wether you have been able to tolerate the fruit by itself or wether you've needed to eat soynuts or some protein with the fruit..........
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.....please ask any questions you might have....we all support each other here and we would like to help you however we can....
i see that you are from danville,illinois...i was in danville for a church conference about 7 years ago...it is a beautiful place to live.....God bless your continued success.......................niki

Hi everyone. On August 12 I posted that I was now down to using only  50 units of Lantus insulin every morining.  Because of LDL my fasting blood sugar level in the mornings has been in the 80 to 90 range and I now am taking only45 units once a day.  I am still eating all the fresh and frozen fruit I can eat.  I won't be weighing myself for a few more weeks again, but I can tell ya that my clothes are starting to look pretty silly on me now.  Thank you so much Father.

Hi all, I just got off the phone with my Dr.'s office.  I had lab work done in April and again last week.  My A1C (blood sugar level) went from a 9.9 (very bad) to a 4.9 !!! MY doctor was so thrilled!!!!He just can't believe what LDL has done so far for me.  He once again reduced the amount of insulin that I take daily.  I am now taking on 25 units.  I use to take 90 units.  I hope that other insulin dependent diabetics are having similar results.  I still eat all the fresh fruit and air popped pop corn I can hold, have my protein at lunch.  I must stay away from potatoes, bread, rice, pasta so this program is truly a gift to me from our Father.

hi mary...thank you SO MUCH for posting this here where diabetics can read all that let's do lunch has done and can do to manage and treat type 2 diabetes.....
   i cannot get over your hgb A1C going from 9.9 to 4.9....that's unbelievable....as i had said,the hgbA1C of a non-diabetic is below 6 and when i had it done as a screening for diabetes,mine was 5.7(and i am not a diabetic)..........
your dose of lantus down to 25 is fantastic.......i can't WAIT to see you post that you're off medication entirely....
lately at my job,it's unusual for someone not to comment on how much weight i've lost(almost 35 lbs)...i can't wait to share this info with them..although none of the nurses i work with are diabetics(to my knowledge)they see the ravages of uncontrolled diabetes every day(i work on a sub acute rehab unit).......and i can't wait to have this discussion around the dieticians and perhaps a dr or two.....
i WILL say it again...there is NO better way than let's do lunch.....and diabetics get a BIG BONUS in that they save themselves from the damage that diabetes causes taking the tiger and turning it into a kitten.....sincerely,niki
