Medical mystery

Post by BMorg »

This is not a medical success story...more of a medical mystery. And I am certainly not requesting medical advice. But my husband has had extreme pain in his legs for 6-7 years. No dr has ever been able to diagnose anything, all tests run are always inconclusive. It is not in the joints, just muscle from his hips down. His legs are so tender that even the cat jumping up to sit on his lap is uncomfortable. They hurt 24-hrs a day, and he even has to preach sitting on a stool because he cannot stand for long periods of time. I've suspected fibromyalgia, because I was nearly bed-fast with it for 2 years about 20 years ago, but my pain only came with movement, his is constant. I can't help but think there must be some nutritional component to this. He is gladly doing LDL with me and has lost about 15 lbs in 2 months. He is almost at his ideal weight. I am just hoping and praying that something in the LDL woe will trigger some healing for him. His quality of life right now is so poor and I hate it for him. But I feel pretty helpless. Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this.

I had chronic pain with my multiple sclerosis for about the past 10 years.  I just realized a couple of months ago that I hadn't been in pain for I don't know how long.  The foods we eat are anti-inflammatory.  I pray it will help your husband also, it took 8-10 months for me.  Pam

Beth my husband has had extreme pain in his leg since Feb. Day and night. His quality of life has changed so much. Sometimes he could not sleep at night, got very little rest because of the pain. He could not drive. He  found out he had shingles. One Dr said it can take months even years to get over it. One told him 104 days. He is finally getting better, he can sleep now and drive again, but still has pain to a lesser degree. I don't know of course if this is your husbands problem or not. He would have to check with his DR. My husband found that out of all the meds given him mortin helped the most. When it got so bad he got ansie he drink a shot of burboun or wine he said that helped. I hope your husband gets better soon, it's hard seeing them in consent pain. Hope maybe this helps .  WITHER

Thanks Wither, I'm glad your husband got a diagnosis. That is the frustrating part. If we could just put a name to it. He says it is like a constant toothache, but only in his leg muscles. Both legs together. It gets worse at night, and he has trouble finding a comfortable position. He'll go from the recliner, to the couch, to the floor, then finally on to bed. And lately, he can't even sleep in in the morning, because as soon as he wakes up, the pain starts and he has to get up...even if it is 4 or 5 in the a.m. Weird.

Hi Beth,

Did the doctor rule out Peripheral Arterial Disease? (PAD).

I think cholesterol medications also cause muscle pain.  It would be worth it to ask...

Yes, MusicManic, cholesterol meds can cause muscle pain, but he is not on any medications.

My husband's body stopped producing testosterone and all of his muscles hurt.  If this hadn't also effected his little swimmers count, while we were trying to have a 2nd baby we wouldn't have found out what the problem was as quickly. In fact the specialists had given up and were ready to send him off to a major state hospital when our family doctor thought to check this.  I hope this helps.  Julybug

Julybug...how did they diagnose this...? Bloodwork? That could very possibly be contributing to this problem.

Beth, I know it's so hard to get a diagnois. Everytime my husband went back to the Dr. they would have something different to say. And you can't always get your own Dr. when you need to go. They would each give him different meds, that didn't kill the pain.  Findally they send him to physical medicine. They deal with pain problems there. He saw a great Dr,. that seems to know his business. He ordered him a MRI which they don't like to do because of the expense to them. He said that will tell all. Getting the results next week. He has begun to get better though. Mybe if you don't get a diagnois you could try to push for the MRI. That should reveal the problem he has. I know just not knowing, you just feel so helpless. Hope the best for you and your husband............Wither

Hi, Does your husband wear any restrictive clothing?  Here is what happened to me. I had terrible ankle/foot pain several years ago when I was standing,  it felt like I was standing on leg stubs. Like my feet weren't even there.  As long as I moved it didn't hurt but standing still really killed me.   Went to the dr., got arch supports nothing helped.  I figured this one out myself.....I was wearing support hose (probably didn't even need them just a thing that was suppose to be good for you)    Well, I had quit smoking and gained ten/twenty pounds.  I could still get the same size support hose on... Then on a three day weekend, I noticed my legs didn't hurt as bad.  My legs are fine now after I quit wearing them.  jj

DH had alot of back pain and figured out that keeping his belt too tight (to hold up his pants because no rear end!) was what was causing the pain. Found a good brand of suspenders and back pain cured.

However, the testosterone level may be something to look into. It is a simple blood test. We are starting to give more testosterone injections where I work. I think doctors are becoming more aware of low levels and are testing more. Hope that is all it takes to get him up and going good again. Chronic pain is such a drain on anyone.

Yes blood work but they have to looking for low testosterone.  This is not a test normally done.  More and more guys are having this problem.  My hubby was 33 yrs old when this happened.  It really doesn't normally happen to men until they are in there 70's.  Hope this helps.  Julybug

Just a two cents here. Know there are many reasons why people have chronic pain. Aspertame was a source of great pain for me. I would make sure your DH was eating nothing with it in it.
I think the blood work and checking for low testosterone is a great idea.
I love a medical mystery. I will keep my eyes on this thread and will hope that your hubby will get better!

JUST A LITTLE UPDATE ON THE MEDICAL MYSTERY. Hubby has gone for complete blood work...including testing for low testosterone. I know I've heard so many stories of women with low horomone levels (aches and pains, etc), it just makes sense to check men's hormone levels. So, I'll let ya know when the results are in.

HI B,

Sorry to hear about your husband's condition. That must be terrible for him to endure and for you to witness. We will be waiting to hear the results. I hope they can identify the issue and remedy it.

There is one more thing that is diet related that I would mention - and the reason why so many of us feel so much better on LDL.  As Pam mentioned LDL foods are largely anti inflammatory (alkaline). You can do a simple search on the internet for "alkaline and acidic foods list".  Doctors are finally beginning to understand and report that most disease begins bc the body is too acidic. We need to be alkaline for good health. If we eat more alkaline foods - like we do on LDL - we feel better and are less likely to be ill or head toward any major disease. I would of course check with a nutritionist to make sure you get balance of nutrients if you are avoiding acidic foods bc the list is long! But you don;t really have to avoid them all - just transition from eating more acidic foods to eating more alkaline.

Anyway, something else to think about.
