NEEDWIFES SWEET CINNAMON FRIES

THIS IS A NEEDWIFE FAVORITE

2 RUTABAGAS
CINNAMON
SWEET AND LOW OR YOUR SWEETENER
BUTTER FLAVORED COOKING SPRAY

PREHEAT OVEN TO 425


NOW REMEMBER WHEN PEELING A RUTABAGA IT HAS 2 SKINS, THE OUTER AND A INNER WITCH IS VERY BITTER, SO GET THEN BOTH.

NOW CUT THEM IN HALF, NOW CUT THEM IN HALF MOON SHAPES, CUT THEM 3/4 INCH THICK.

ONCE CUT , TAKE OUT A COOKIE SHEET AND SPRAY WITH YOUR BUTTER FLAVORED SPRAY, THEN PLACE OUT SLICES ON SHEET AND SPRAY LIGHTLY WITH YOUR BUTTER FLAVORED SPRAY.

PUT IN OVEN FOR 30 MINS. AND BAKE, THEN REMOVE AND FLIP FRIES OVER AND  SPRINKLE CINNAMON THEN SWEETENER ON THEN, AFTER THAT SPRAY FRIES LIGHTLY WITH BUTTER FLAVORED SPRAY TO HOLD DOWN CINNAMON AND  SWEETENER AND MOISTURIZE THE FRIES  .

PLACE BACK IN OVER AND BAKE FOR 15-20 MORE MINS (AFTER  10 MINS. START CHECKING FOR DESIRED TEXTURE.)

I LOVE THESE FRIES , I MAKE THEM AT LEAST 6 TIMES A WEEK.

NOW HERE IS THE BEAUTY OF THESE FRIES. YOU  CAN TAKE THIS SAME RECIPE AND SWAP OUT THE CINNAMON AND SWEETENER FOR GARLIC AND ONION POWER OR PUMPKIN PIE SPICE AND SWEETENER OR  FF CHEESE OR SUGAR FREE KETCHUP OR FF RANCH OR ONE OF MY FAVORITES BARBECUE SAUCE .

THE RUTABAGA SHOULD BE YOUR BEST FRIEND. IF YOU TRIED THE RUTABAGA AND DIDN'T LIKE IT BECAUSE IT WAS BITTER, THEN YOU DIDN'T GET OFF BOTH SKINS.

TRY THIS ROOTY FRIEND  :inlove: AGAIN .

NOW FOR THOSE WHO LIKED MY POTATO SALAD, TAKE YOU  3 LARGE RUTABAGAS AND PEEL AND DICE AND BOIL AND WHEN SOFT TAKE 3/4 OF THEM AND MASH AND THE OTHER 1/4 LEAVE DICED AND MIX ALL TO REPLACE THE STEAMED CAULIFLOWER.

I ALSO TAKE THE RUTABAGAS AND PEEL AND BOIL AND MASH AND COVER WITH PARKAY  BUTTER SPRAY AND SALT AND PEPPER AND SERVE AS MASH POTATOES WITH GREEN BEANS AND BAKED CHICKEN. OK GOT TO GO, I AM MAKING SOME GREEN BEAN FRENCH FRIES. I HOPE YOU LIKE . TTYL NEEDWIFE  :thumbsup:

Needwife, I plan to make the cinnamon fries without the cinnamon and sweetner. I'll use onion powder, sea salt and ground pepper.

SEE THATS THE BEAUTY OF THE RECIPE, YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE ANYTHING FOR THE CINNAMON AND SWEETENER.

I ALSO TAKE RUTABAGAS AND PEEL AND BOIL AND MASH AND ADD APPLE CINNAMON SPICE OR PUMPKIN PIE SPICE AND SWEETENER TO THEM FOR BREAKFAST LIKE OATMEAL.

OK, Kevin, I'm game.  *evil*  I've heard of Rutabagas but have never tried them.  Do must grocery stores have them or do I need a specialty store?  What color are they?  Is the inner skin a different color or do you just peel them twice?  Do they taste like a potatoe?  My Husband does not really like the white bean substitute for potatoes (he says he tastes too much "bean") but if rutabagas taste more like potatoes that might work.

Needwife, I am going to give this a try as I LOVE rutabaga. I usually just mashed them and eat um like that.I would have them more often but their so darn hard to cut :thumbdown:

NEEDWIFE, YOU DO MAKE THE RUTABAGA SOUND YUMMY.  ONLY ONE TIME DID I BRING ONE HOME AND FOUND IT TOUGHER TO PEEL THAN A BUTTERNUT SQUASH.  I DON'T REMEMBER HOW I PREPARED IT BUT IT WASN'T WORTH MY TIME AND MONEY THE WAY I DID IT.  MAYBE I SHOULD TRY A SMALLER RUTABAGA.....THE ONE I HAD WAS LARGE.  I DID DISCOVER THAT A SMALLER BUTTERNUT SQUASH WAS EASIER TO PEEL THAN A LARGER ONE.
IF I GO BACK TO A RUTABAGA IT WILL BE BECAUSE OF YOU, NEEDWIFE.  STAY TUNED!!

OK GINNY , I WILL TRY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS , YES MOST STORES HAVE RUTABAGAS IN THE FRESH VEG. SECTION.

THE COLOR VARIES , FRESH OUT OF THE GROUND, THEY ARE PURPLE ON TOP AND TAN ON THE BOTTOM, LIKE A TURNIP, BUT AFTER HARVEST THE TOPS AND BOTTOMS ARE CUT AND THEY ARE DIPPED IN A THICK WAX FOR PRESERVING THEM AND THEY TAKE ON A BROWNISH COLOR  .

YOU WILL KNOW IT IS A RUTABAGA BY THE THICK WAX COATING. THE INNER PEELING IS A LITTLE DARKER THAN THE PULP. A  FRESH YOUNG RUTABAGA HAS VERY LITTLE TASTE, THE OLDER THEY GET THE MORE OF FLAVOR OF A WEAK CABBAGE OR TURNIP TASTE.

BUT A YOUNG RUTABAGA WILL TAKE THE FLAVOR OF ANY SPICE. I USE PARKAY BUTTERY SPRAY IN THE BLUE PLASTIC PUMP BOTTLE AND SALT AND PEPPER FOR THE MASH POTATO FLAVOR, THERE IS ALSO A SPICE CALLED BAKON THAT I ORDER ONLINE THAT TASTE LIKE HICKORY SMOKED BACON.

I USE IT IN MY MASH RUTATATERS.LOL  NOW RODIE TO CUT THEM I USE A FISH FLAY KNIFE, I CUT IN HALF FIRST, THAT MAKES IT EASIER TO HOLD.  MRS.J  A SHARP FLAY KNIFE WILL MAKE RUTABAGA CUTTING EASY.

THE REASON MOST PEOPLE DONT EAT RUTABAGAS IS THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY ARE NO GOOD.

HERE IS A LITTLE HISTORY FOR YOU. AFTER WORLD WAR 1 THE ONLY FOOD AVAILABLE WAS RUTABAGAS AND  THE PEOPLE ATE SO MANY TO KEEP FROM STARVING THAT THEY VOWELLED THEY WOULD (NEVER) EAT ANOTHER RUTABAGA AND THERE CHILDREN WOULD NOT HAVE TO EAT THEM EITHER .

NOW YOU  KNOW WHY THEY ARE UNPOPULAR .  BUT I CAN TELL YOU NOW , THE NUMBER OF DISHES YOU CAN MAKE WITH A RUTABAGA IS ENDLESS. ANYWHERE YOU CAN USE A POTATO  YOU CAN USE A RUTABAGA,  OK HOPE YOU ENJOY MY POST. I AM HEADED BACK TO THE KITCHEN FOR MY TUNA  OMELET. TTYL NEEDWIFE  :thumbsup:

Rutabagas, haven't had any of those in a very loooooong time. Just might have to buy some.

Thanks for the info, after reading the post about the video on butternut squash I went in and typed in how to cut a rutabaga,that YOU TUBE has everything on it,it amazes me,now I guess(after 43 years) I just need to get some sharp knives,lol!

Needwife, just wondering if you've ever sauteed turnip slices, like fried potatoes? They're so good with eggs for a filling breakfast! I used EVOO for sauteeing, but from what I understand, Extra Virgin Coconut oil is more nutritious for "frying". Haven't tried that yet.  I like to add onions to these faux potatoes,too. Yum!

BTW, when I cook eggs I very seldom eat the yolk. I "fry" the whole egg till hard, and then lift the yolk out and dispose of it. I may cook 3 eggs this way. This is mainly done because I don't really like the taste of yolk unless it's combined with more egg whites to lessen the "yolky" taste. I know most people love the taste of egg yolks, but alas, I'm not one of them. :sick:

I HAVE NEVER TRIED THE TURNIPS, I SAUTÉED  RUTABAGAS AND GREEN PEPPERS AND ONIONS TONIGHT, I DICE UP THE RUTABAGAS REAL  SMALL AND BOIL THEM ABOUT 15-20 MINS. BEFORE SAUTÉING  IN PAN WITH GREEN PEPPERS AND ONIONS,

IF YOU TRY TO  COOK THEM ALL TOGETHER  , THE GREEN PEPPER AND ONIONS WILL COOK AWAY BEFORE THE RUTABAGAS GET SOFT ,

I DONT (EVER) USE OIL  OF ANY KIND  TO COOK WITH,  I  USE  BUTTER FLAVORED COOKING SPRAY, ON ALL STIR-FRYS  AND IN THINGS I COOK IN A FRYING PAN, I SPRAY THE PAN WELL AND PUT IN VEGS. AND FRY VEGS TILL THEY START TO STICK AND  AS SOON  AS THEY TRY TO STICK, I ADD 1 INCH OF WATER IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN AND STIR WELL AND THEN JUST LET THE WATER COOK AWAY,STIRRING FROM TIME TO TIME .

BUY THE TIME THE WATER HAS STEAMED AWAY , THE VEGS ARE DONE.  I DO THIS BECAUSE MY CALORIES ARE SPECIAL TO ME, I DONT WASTE THEN ON OIL.  I HAVE YET TO FIND SOMETHING THAT I CANT COOK WITH  BUTTER FLAVORED COOKING SPRAY AND A LITTLE WATER.LOL

I USE TO BUY EGG WHITES BUT SINCE I BOUGHT SOME CHICKENS I USE THE WHOLE EGG NOW , I TRIED FOR THE LONGEST TIME TO FIND ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU BREAK A EGG INTO AND IT SEPARATES THE YOKE AND WHITE, BUT I NEVER COULD FIND ONE. OK TTYL NEEDWIFE  :thumbsup:

I love rutabagas...and have used them with onions and peppers for breakfast with eggs.  I am going to get one tomorrow and make your cinnamon fries.  Sounds yummy. I do have turnips and will try them the way SweetRose does.

I would love to be able to eat rutabagas instead of potatoes..but I bought a medium sized one the other day and it was almost $2.00..  not worth it right now.

Thanks, Needwife, for all your info.  I Googled Rutabagas the other night and found one in my local Walmart Grocery.  I bought it but haven't had time to try it.  I've talked to lots of friends here in Florida (I'm from the North and we never had any of this Southern food:  rutabagas, turnips, greens, black-eyed peas, etc.) so I'm learning a lot and trying lots of new foods.  Some of my friends have indicated that the rutabagas give you a lot of gas.  If this is true, I may have to wait until we head to Wauchula and won't be going out much. (LOL).  I may also try a turnip (how do I know if they are good or ready to eat?).

THE RUTABAGAS ARE 88CENTS A POUND AT WALMART HERE, AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT REAL SOFT OR MOLDY THEY ARE MORE THEN  LIKELY GOOD. I HAVE NEVER CUT OPEN A BAD ONE .  OK TTYL  NEEDWIFE    :thumbsup:
