FRIED CABBAGE

This is one of my favorite side dishes that I made a lot while on Weight Watchers (LDL is better!).

FRIED CABBAGE

4 Tbs. Olive Oil

1 small head of green cabbage, shredded

Salt and pepper to taste (the more, the better)

In a large frying pan, on high heat, add olive oil.  Before the oil get too hot, add shredded cabbage.  Season with salt and pepper.  Toss cabbage in oil to coat.  Turn down heat to medium and cover.  Every 10 minutes or so, turn cabbage over so it brows evenly.  Cook until deep brown.

I have never had fried cabbage.  We always  cook ours in a pot and add salt, EVOO and enough water to cover. Cook just until tender. Very good with a little vinegar added when you eat it............Will have to try it fried.

This sounds like a great recipe....

You can also try not using any fat....and putting cabbage chunks in a pan with a little water & chicken bouillon & black pepper....cover and cook until tender....

Very tasty and doesn't need any additional fat....

I make huge portions of fried cabbage, zucchini, julienned carrots, onions, mushrooms and saute them up all at once...

I add salt pepper, a tiny bit of hoisin sauce and toss...

It lasts a week in the fridge, and is so easy to reheat as a side dish or main dish...

I have been making fried cabbage for years. This is a great crowd pleaser. I use onions during the cooking process for enhanced flavor. Thanks for your recipes.

You must try this dish. I love *love* fried cabbage but I agree with LizzyClem regarding the onions. That's how I make mine...real yummy :thumbsup:

Saundra Shaver, remember hoisin sauce has sugar so only use that "tiny bit" or better yet, make your own from scratch using honey which is LDL friendly in small amounts :thumbsup:

Savannah, I like your idea, too. It's probably more of a steamed version rather than a fried taste and I love streamed veggies.

When I was a kid, my mother used to have to force us to eat "cooked cabbage"...the boiled kind...YUCK!

But she found a recipe for Stir fried cabbage, and we loved it!  Everyone ate it, without complaints, and I've got a Green Bag of raw cut up waiting in the fridge for single servings.

Our recipe called for cabbage, green onion, bell pepper (I use red), I think a little celery, and after you've stir fried for a bit, add a couple dashes of nutmeg, then serve with a splash of soy sauce.  I also add some mushrooms and bean sprouts if I have them.

Made my standard fried cabbage last night for supper before I saw the way you make it.  Yours sounds a lot more flavorful than mine  :thumbsup: Next time I'm in the mood for fried cabbage, I am definitely going to try your version.

I made this today and loved it!
Just the cabbage and an onion with a little olive oil.
Let it cook quite a while till it was nice and brown. Yummy.

Hey Vicki,

There is a reason why they call us "Krauts"  ;D I love all different kinds of cabbage.

This is a recipe i really love:

1 med.Cabbage,cut in 1" pieces
1.5 lbs ground meat
0.5 Tsp Carawayseeds
1 garlic clove, course diced
Salt, Pepper
Oil

Heat the oil and fry the ground meat real good.
Add the Salt, Pepper and garlic.
Remove everything from the pan.

Heat a little oil in the pan again and add the cabagge.
Cover and let it cook for 5 Minutes.
Then uncover and cook on medium heat until the cabbage is golden brown.

Add Salt, Pepper and Carawayseeds
Keep cooking till it gets a nice brownish color...

I had fried cabbage this weekend and I put Braggs Aminos on it while I was cooking it-it was really good that way!

FYI..You can also bake cabbage in the oven in cast iron/lid pot (dutch oven)with  alittle liquid..no smell in your house....

Here is recipe:

1 head of cabbage
1-2 pats of butter
evoo
salt and pepper
water
sprinkle of sugar (optional)
paprika (optional)
crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Pre-heat oven 350-375 depending on how hot your oven gets
spray roaster pan or deep casserole or dutch oven with lid

cut cabbage into strips and place into dish..
pour evoo over cabbage
put a pat or 2 of butter on top of cabbage
salt and pepper
put enough water to basically cover bottom-no more than 1/4 way up
cover and bake for 45 min. remove lid and continue to cook until water has evaporated..stir ocasionally
I bake mine until cabbage is real tender and has started turning brown
My total time of baking is around 1&1/2 to 1&3/4 hours..

You don't have as much of an after taste as you do when you boil it

You could also add rutabagers.....Enjoy this is very good..I have done both without rutabagers and with both very good...

LOVE fried sauerkraut....been fixing that for years, and haven't had it in a while.  I buy sauerkraut in a jar (refrigerated section) on in a bag, rinse and drain, toss into skilled with evoo, finely sliced onion, celery seed, and sprinkle with Italian seasoning, and sometimes a little garlic salt...I cook until sort of browned!  Very yummy with roasted pork tenderloin, or broiled chicken.

Made fried cabbage yesterday for the first time.......It was sooooo good. I don't think I will ever boil cabbage again.
