Homemade Ketchup In A Blender

Post by Red Lion Lass »

This recipe will keep for several months, just as is, in the refrigerator. Of course, you may add other seasonings or make it less spicy by reducing or eliminating the red pepper flakes.

Ingredients:

1 onion, cut into chunks
1 clove, garlic (left whole)
5 tablespoons, frozen apple juice concentrate (undiluted)
1 6-ounce can, tomato paste
1/2 cup, cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon, pepper
1/4 teaspoon, red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon, ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon, ground cloves

Directions:

In a blender, combine the onion pieces, garlic clove, and apple juice concentrate and blend until a puree is formed. Add the tomato paste, vinegar, pepper, red pepper flakes, cinnamon, and cloves. Blend until ketchup is smooth. Store in the refrigerator in a tightly covered jar.

Makes approximately 1 1/2 cups.

I recently saw on the boards that there are a lot of people trying to find a ketchup without a lot of sugar or HFCS. We don't use a lot of ketchup unless there is a BIG FAMILY GET TOGETHER.

This is still the recipe we use but with organic apple juice in place of the concentrate.

CQ... knew you would come through with an answer to the ketchup question.  Somehow I missed this recipe way back when so I am adding it to the section in my recipe binder where I keep recipes that are substitutes for commercial products (salad dressings, spice mixes, etc).

VickiLynn,

If you don't want to take the time to make it from scratch, Hunt's has come out with a ketchup that doesn't contain HFCS. We've tried it and it's OK but my sons prefer to make this recipe and add either habanero or jalapeno peppers.

My husband would love the addition of hot peppers.  I can't seem to keep enough hot sauce stocked for his use but I'll have to make two batches.  One hot and one regular as my mouth can't tolerate really hot/spicy foods.

For those that are having to follow a gluten free diet or just trying to avoid wheat, you might want to consider making your own ketchup. Some brands (excluding Heinz and Hunt's) use gluten as a stabilizer for their products. That's why it's so important to read the labels.
