Dry Onion Soup Mix (without MSG)

Post by CodingQueen »

Store bought dry onion soup mixes contain MSG and the homemade versions use bouillon (hidden MSG)...CQ

Ingredients for one packet:

8 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon turmeric, optional
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon Stevia or other sugar substitute to equal 1/2 teaspoon of sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

Directions:

Mix ingredients well and store in airtight container for up to six months.

I just printed out Wendy's Olive Meat Loaf recipe and it calls for Lipton Onion Soup Mix.  I am going to use your homemade one instead of my normal one because the beef boullion I have contains all kinds of bad ingredients that I didn't realize were in it (I have had it for quite a while).

CQ,

Just reread your recipe and noticed it has turmeric in it.  I was told just this week that turmeric is a natural anti-inflamatory (sic) by someone whose parents use it as a homeopathic remedy.  Do you know if this is true?  If so, I sure could use it for my arthritic hip!

CQ
Does this taste just like the Lipton soup mix?  I have loved the taste of onion soup mix in lots of things.  I bookmarked the recipe to try it the next time I need onion soup mix.

Mary,

Thanks for the info.  Read about it's health benefits on the internet.  I have a health condition that might not allow me to take it, but I'm going to check with my specialist.

Wendy,

I can't tell the difference in any of the recipes I've made using this instead of the Lipton mix. I also use the Himalayan salt for the recipe so I don't swell up afterwards.

My brother-in-law used this recipe to make Lipton soup burgers a few weeks ago. No one knew that he hadn't actually used Lipton soup mix except my mother-in-law who's severely allergic to MSG. Everyone kept asking him for the recipe...he just laughed said it was on the box.

Thanks CQ for this recipe.  I wish companies wouldn't ruin their products by putting MSG in them.  Jerrie :)
