buckwheat

Post by rollingpat »

Does anyone know if this is true?  This was posted on one of my recipe sites.

The Basics on Buckwheat

Despite its name, buckwheat is not really wheat, nor is it any other grain;
it's actually the fruit of a plant related to sorrel and rhubarb.

Nevertheless, because of its grain-like characteristics, this fiber-rich
food is categorized as a whole grain on the South Beach DietR, so you can
enjoy buckwheat beginning in Phase 2. Compared to other "grains," buckwheat
is a source of quality protein since it contains eight essential amino acids
- proteins that your body needs to help repair tissue and build cells. It's
also a powerful source of certain minerals - especially magnesium, which
helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes a healthy blood pressure.

I will be interested to see what the experts say about this. A couple of things I noticed 1 cup is about 154 calories with about 53 g of carbs plus 27 g of "other carbs" and 2.02 g of sugar. That seems like a lot but I don't know. Pancakes and bread are buckwheat mixed with wheat flour so I know that would be a no no. It says buckwheat are fruit seeds. They seem like something that would be healthy but I am not sure it would fit in with LDL. Still always interested in learning new things.

Thank you for the quick answer on that one Roger.  It didn't seem like an LDL thing but I just wasn't sure.  Glad you are keeping us in check!!!  It's wonderful you take the time to answer these things yourself..

God bless you right back,
Pat

Buckwheat is a fruit seed like u said and in not sure why RTW said it was a grain because it's not and the fact it has wheat in its name is misleading...but I do see that it can be Starchy and high carb so it may joy be a good LDl food
