I enjoy prunes and dried apricots. Will this be a problem?

My husband eats six Sunsweet prunes each morning to "get things moving"
We are also eating fresh strawberries, bananas, apples, grapes, etc.  Is that ok?

Hi Carol,

I had a real problem with "getting things moving" when I first started LDL.  I think it was Niki who suggested I buy some psyllium husks from the heath food store, which I did, and I no longer have that problem.  Every day I mix a rounded tablespoonful in a small amount of juice (apple, orange) stir it up and bottoms up!  It actually is quite tastless, but goes down better in juice than water.  I tried water once, never again!

Unless he truly enjoys the prunes, you might keep this in mind!

Blessings,
Doreen

Roger Troy - I'm glad you told me about the bananas.  Do they cause a rise in blood sugar more than other fruit?

Doreen - Good info - I will try the psyllium husks.

Thanks!

i absolutely wouldn't eat dried fruit for optimum loss......ALTHOUGH, bear in mind that a man's metabolism and nutritional needs are different than a woman's.......i don't usually eat dried fruit.....i bought some organic raisins the other day when i went to the health food supermarket for some other stuff and i mix them with dried roasted chick peas....after i ate fruit, i made some popcorn and had a handful of chickpeas and raisins........this is unusual for me..........
i eat bananas with no problem...........i don't always have them in the house....if i have them, i eat a couple...sometimes none....sometimes one.....i ate 2 small bananas and 2 pears this morning...........i strongly encourage people to stick to that big fruit meal in the morning....it really gets you going for the day more than any other food......and don't forget, if you eat ANYTHING, make a meal out of it....DON'T graze...

I'm glad bananas are OK.  I usually start off with a banana every morning and sometimes have a couple.  They seem to work fine for me and fill me up.  And, they seem to be the easiest fruit to grab and eat when you've got to have something sweet......

I'm curious as to why bananas should be limited?

that's something roger would have to reply to, because i have no problem eating them and you're right...they DO fill you up, they ARE easy to grab...WHAT could be better?....they're inexpensive, are available all year, they have a thick skin which you discard so they don't absorb as many pesticides as thin skinned fruit....as i said, i don't REALLY like bananas, but i definitely eat them.....i buy them from costco for something like 40 cents a pound...my daughter can't seem to live without them and takes one to work every day....just like you said, they're easy to eat in most situations...

Niki,
This is so true.  Its so easy to get into the habit of just eating a little of something and being hungry all day long because of it.  So much smarter to fill up and be satisfied FOR HOURS!!!!

This is why you are my friend cause your words always speak to me.

Love and God Bless
Debbie

THERE YA GO........NOW, you're talkin....

you're a great friend, deb...you don't KNOW how i wish you lived closer...i'd be comin over to your house to drag you out to walk and then we'd be drinkin coffee together........

YOU help ME......LOADS.............YOU were the one that told me if i was tempted to go off, to go heavy on the protein and it works..........and when i need to get back on track and i eat sausage and eggs?....i got THAT idea from YOU...............

it DEFINITELY works....not grazing.......i really kind of realized that accidentally...because i HATE being hungry, one little taste of ANYTHING just doesn't cut it with me.........so, i realized that the fuller i was, the longer i lasted before i got hungry again.....this is a VERY important principle of why let's do lunch works...............

I ran across this statement regarding dehydrated fruits on CNN.com:

In general, I'm not a big fan of dried fruit either as dried fruit is much more calorically dense than fresh fruit because of its significantly lower water content. Fresh fruit is just as healthy as dried fruit and you don't have to worry about added sugar, fat or portion sizes, which must be more closely controlled when it comes to dried fruit.

Dakota girl - thanks for that info, it makes sense.  I am trying to get my husband switched to psyllium husks, as Niki suggested to Doreen.
