Suggestions for a crisis that is coming!!

Ok, here's the deal. I live in Georgia and every year I absolutely can't wait for the Georgia tomatoes come out because all my life we would eat tomato sandwiches when they came out. They are so good but I have always eaten them on soft white bread with 1/2 inch thick mayo on both sides of the bread. They aren't good unless they are dripping down your arms! I don't like low fat or light mayo, I'm a big mayo eater and those taste wrong, they are too sweet to me. Does anyone have any ideas for me? The time is almost here and I want to be prepared to make the right choice!!

Thanks for all help!

Good Morning again Tina!

I work for the Holiday Inn Brand Franchise.  The founder Kemmons Wilson had a quote he used a lot:

"Why worry when 50% of what you are worrying about won't happen, and the other 50% is going to happen anyway!"

This is only my opinion and my novice understanding of this way of eating right now...  if you are following the LDL way of eating, soon you will not crave those unhealthy choices that you used to crave.  They just won't sound that good to you.  On another note... if the tomatoes come and the family is standing around with mayo dripping down their collective elbows, and the desire is just too strong to overcome... enjoy the moment!

Don't beat yourself up... don't think you've screwed up for good.  If you get into that mindset, it's a no-win situation.

I'm sure the Masters of LDL will have some better advice, but know that I understand where you're coming from... and you are not alone!

Have a blessed day!

Bonnie

Thanks again Bonnie! It is great to hear all of your insights. I will do my best, I just really could go for a good tomato sandwich right now and I guess when your in the moment it doesn't feel like the desire for that food will ever go away.

Tina,

I have added the latest Kraft mayo to my fridge shelf:  Kraft Mayo with Olive Oil.  Reduced Fat Mayonnaise.  It's not the "top of the line" mayo, but it sure is good.  Nix the white bread, get out some corn thins, spread some of this mayo on and top with the fresh tomatoes.  My mouth is watering!

Enjoy!

Thanks Pat! Kraft mayo is what I use, does the olive oil kind say low fat or does it just say made with olive oil? It  sounds good anyway, I hope it is better than all of those other fat free or low fat mayo's I don't like them because they are sweet. I think I will try this one. I still haven't gotten any of the corn crisps yet, I will be going into town on Thurs. and I will see if they have any at the health food store. I can't afford the ones you get online.

Hi Tina,

I also use the Kraft mayo with olive oil and reduced fat.  I made chicken salad with it last night for a tea today and it is good.  I have found the corn thins wiork just fine to put mayo and sliced tomatoes on.

It is funny how our taste change.  My dh is a bread lover and was concerned he couldn't do this with me.  Now he eats corn thins all the time and loves them.  He makes sandwiches for work and etc.  So give it a try.

Hugs, Carrole

I can't believe you are a true mayo lover and do not eat Hellmans.  I can't imagine eating anything else. I have to say I haven't had any since I started LDL a week ago Monday and I am really not craving it.  And I am a true lover, my friends all kid me, we go to Cancun together every year and they all collect the packets of Mayo for me before we go so I can have my Hellmans while we are away. lol  I will have to try the Kraft w/ olive oil.

Oh wow, Tina!

Sweet garden fresh tomatoes, straight from the vine!  *love* Sliced on a sandwich with mayo!   *love*  *love*  And in the South, y'all just KNOW how to make great sandwiches. Bring on the napkins!!

I'm right with you on not liking the taste of some of the low fat/fat free diet mayos. Bleah! BUT, even after only a few days doing LDL as best I can without having my book yet (I thought it might get here yesterday, but NOT -- it had to go from Florida to Seattle, then back to Idaho, so I guess it's taking the scenic route) I find that a smaller amount of richer (higher fat) flavors is just fine and dandy to satisfy. With everything else that I eat, I'm trying to follow the rules as close as I can while I make some changes to what's stocked in the cupboard. Haven't weighed yet, but my clothes fit better even after just a few days.

One of our resident food police, Niki, confirmed this when she said she never gave up her original Hellman's mayo, just used less of it, and was still happy. Thanks Niki!

So my mouth is really looking forward to garden fresh sweet tomatoes, sliced on a Corn Thin, and with a dab of my favorite mayo. I think I can get into that! A little bit of heaven, don't you think? Mm-mmmm!

Someone recently posted a link for finding Corn Thins in your area. Just click on your state:

http://www.cornthins.com/interUSA.aspx

At that time the Florida page was a little wacky, but my Idaho and Washington pages worked fine. You might let your fingers do a little walking to see what you find. I knew I wouldn't find Corn Thins in either of our local li'l grocery stores, but was happy to see them stocked in a couple of cities not TOO far away.

I'm going to try to get a package this weekend, too, and see how I like them. If they're a winner, I'll order a case from Amazon. Let me know what your vote is!

Cheers -- and good luck on your LDL journey!!

Terri

Trying it,
I have tried Hellmans before but I just like the taste of Kraft better. I hope I will be like you and not crave it in a week. My friends always pick on me and call me the dip queen because I dip everything, meat, veggies, fruit, etc. But not anymore. My friends were so shocked a couple of weeks ago when we had a get together and we were supposed to bring snacks and I brought carrots and celery w/no dip. They could not believe that I have gotten over my dipping. I still would like to dip my meat but I haven't and I don't plan to.

Terry,

Thanks for the info and the link, I am going to go check that out. I am going to try the olive oil mayo and see if I like that and if not I guess I'm gonna have to try just a small amount of regular mayo.

hi tina........here is a recipe mary made for hummus.......it is delicious and satisfies the need to dip

Fresh wholesome hummus in less than 5 minutes!  The flavor and texture of this recipe are slightly different to the hummus you might be accustomed to, because I haven't used any tahine (sesame paste) or sesame seeds, but it's pretty close to the real thing.  Tastes good with sliced, fresh veggies such as celery, carrots, raw cauliflower, etc.

INGREDIENTS:

1 15-oz. can of chick peas (garbanzo beans), drained, with the liquid reserved
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup mild olive oil
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 cloves of garlic, chopped
1/4 teaspoon of ground cumin

Put the chick peas into the blender with half of the olive oil, and all of the lemon juice, garlic & cumin.  Blend until smooth. If it's too thick, add the rest of the olive oil and blend again.  If it is still too thick & pasty, add some of the liquid from the canned chick peas, a bit at a time, so it has the right consistency.  Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper then blend for a few more seconds.  Remove from blender into a serving bowl, and stir in the fresh parsley.  Enjoy!

G-d bless

Tina, forget the white bread.  Just stand over the sink and eat the tomatoes as is and let the juice run down your arms!  You could add a little lite mayo to each bite.  I found that adding a healthy squirt of fresh lemon juice to diet mayo counteracts the sweetness and satisfied my mayo jones.

I used to eat PB & banana sandwiches with mayo 1/2 inch thick, like you said.  Sometimes without the banana & PB.  Sometimes just the mayo.  I don't use it anymore at all.  Now all commercial mayo tastes metallic and disgusting.  I've never made it from scratch.  I would probably like that and it would be LDL friendly because you could use EVOO, Egg Beaters and no sugar.  But as long as I don't crave it, I think - why bother?

I now use just a dab of EVOO, lemon juice (or flavored vinegars) & herbs to make tuna, egg & chicken salads.  Mooshed around with a little mashed beans, it is perfectly creamy & tart & yummy.

Thanks Gwen!
So is it ok to have mayo if you make it yourself? I think I would like that! If so, do you have a recipe that I could use to make it?

Thanks,
Tina

Lizzy,
I was just thinking of fried green tomatoes today!! That's funny!! My 11yr old wondered if I was still going to cook them, she said, "They are a tomato so aren't they good for you?". I just laughed and told her that if you leave the floor and the shortening off they are! OMG, it made me want some sooooo bad!! There is nothing like a fried green tomato! And I have to say there is no substitute for them, so I must stay away completely!!

I too love tomato sandwiches - on gooey white bread - until my son who was in dental school in Kentucky told me a story about his experience with them. He was doing yard work part time and was really busy doing alot of yards and flower beds because of the upcoming Kentucky Derby. I guess it is such a big thing and everyone has beautiful flowers and yards for the Derby. Anyway, he was hot and tired - not to mention hungry - when an older lady who's yard he was doing came out carrying a tray of tomato sandwiches and iced tea. He said his heart jumped with joy until he looked down and saw the lady's fingerprints imprinted in the soft squishy bread where she held it to slice it. He said it was hard to choke the sandwich down. He is kind of a germaphobe. He at least is also very gracious and did eat them. Now when I think of eating the soft squishy white stuff, I think of that and it really takes away my craving. :D

Grambonnie,

Your post made me smile as I thought about finger imprints in soft and gooey white bread!  ;D
But, you are correct, now I have that image in my mind...  soft white bread doesn't sound so appealing.

I AM glad however that your son experienced some Kentucky hospitality!  I was raised that you always feed your help (farm hands, lawn mow-ers, landscapers, pool guy, etc)...  and you always take a food gift when visiting a friend or new acquaintance's home.

But then, a lot of my upbringing was centered around food:
As a child, gooey cinnamon rolls and chocolate milk was a treat on Saturday morning - if we cleaned our rooms without being told.
Homemade Tomato Soup & grilled cheese sandwich - when you felt bad
Homemade Chicken noodle soup - when you had a cold
Yellow Mustard on "soft, gooey white bread" - our lunch when times were hard.  As were warm tomatoes from the garden slathered with Mayo.
Stopping at the White Castle on the way to our Aunt's house was a reward for being good during the 2 hour drive.
Seven Layer Banana Cake - Christmas gift from Grandma

The list goes on and on...  I'm sure you and other had such experiences.  For me, it's part of why I am where I am with my weight issues.  I associate food with all my emotions... GOOD or BAD...  and have used it to comfort and celebrate all my life.

Thank God for bringing me here, and very possibly saving my life.

Have a blessed day!

Bonnie
