Coffee helps prevent diabetes, now scientists learn why
By Marni Jameson, Orlando Sentinel

Scientists have long known that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but researchers out of China may have figured out why.
Researchers Ling Zheng, of Wuhan University, and Kun Huang, of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, have found that compounds in coffee inhibit hIAPP (human islet amyloid polypeptide), a substance linked to diabetes. Their study appeared in a recent issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Prior global epidemiological studies have shown that those who drink four or more cups of coffee a day have a 50 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the most prevalent type of diabetes accounting for 95 percent of all cases. Every additional cup reduces the risk by an additional 7 percent.
Scientists looking for ways to prevent diabetes have been investigating ways to block hIAPP, which is present in high levels in the pancreases of those with the disease. Zheng and Huang decided to study whether coffee was doing that.
They analyzed the effects of the major active compounds in coffee, including caffeic acid and caffeine, on hIAPP, and found it inhibited hIAPP significantly. "These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of coffee consumption on type 2 diabetes may be partly due to the ability of major coffee components to inhibit the toxic aggression of hIAPP," the authors concluded.
"A beneficial effect may thus be expected in regular coffee drinkers," they said.

I have to say that I am finding this hard to believe! But I think I'll manage................... Every cup reduces the risk by 7%? Oh I love a really good cup of coffee. Was it real coffee? I don't like instant......

I am coffee drinker so this is good news to me too. Although I must say that I truly do believe that LDL'ers are at the lowest risk of all.

I am a hugh coffee drinker. On a recent visit to my liver specialist, I mentioned the amount of coffee I drink in a day (8-10 cups) because I was worried that this much coffee might be bad for my liver. My doctor said not to worry and didn't even tell me to cut down because he told me that coffee is good for my liver --- who would have thought!

I am also a huge black coffee drinker. I have always wondered why my father never got Diabetes - he has the diabetic pear shaped body and his mother was diabetic and all his brother and two sisters are diabetic - all dying from complications of diabetes. I now think it is his heavy coffee consumption. He was told by a doctor to stop coffee all together due to cardiac arrythmias. He tried but constantly sneaked coffee. So far 81 years old and no diabetes. Might be the coffee.

I'm not sure about this. My father drank coffee all day long. He got diabetes. It was the type that you take a pill to regulate it. To my knowledge he never took insulin. He also had cancer (lung and prostrate). Maybe he was the exception to the rule. I miss him.

really, over the years, they've gone back and forth about coffee.....one year it's good for you, then a new study comes out saying it's bad........last year, before i went on my cruise to bermuda mid august, i gave up coffee and did pretty strict let's do lunch for 7 1/2 months....i still have problems with my thyroid so i only lost about 15 pounds in ALL that time.........but, as soon as i got on the boat, i couldn't wait to have a cup of coffee....now, i drink 2 big mugs every morning which is 5 cups according to my coffee maker and i hope i never have to give it up again....
life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain..

Niki,
I'm with you. I love my coffee in the morning. The smell is wonderful, it fills the house when it's brewing.

So, Niki,
Has their been any difference in your weight now that you have added coffee back in?
I guess according to how they measure, I must be drinking 10 cups a day.
Love that coffee!
