garbanzo bean flour

Post by TrishaD »

Hi-
I found garbanzo bean flour in the local health food store.  Has anyone used this?  Is it on LDL?
Any suggestions for use? There was a recipe on the label for hummus and I tried that, but it had a gelatin-like texture when left in the refrigerator for a day . I didn't care for that.

Hi Trisha,

Garbanzo bean flour is a better choice when you just have to use flour.  However, it's a processed food so if you use it too often it may stall your weight loss.  :)  Hope this helps.

TrishaD,

I love the recipes for hummus that you'll find on the boards. Hummus and veggies are one of my favorite snacks...or even a meal.

I use garbanzo bean (chickpea) flour whenever I'm making something that calls for flour and there's no getting around it without using it. In otherwords, if you can't leave the flour out, it's a great alternative.

I use seasoned garbanzo bean flour to coat chicken breasts. I then saute them in a little evoo till crisp! Yum! And the great thing is that you don't have to use a lot of the garbanzo flour to make it crispy and wonderful~ you can do the same thing with halibut filets and shrimp.

Thanks for the idea about using the flour to coat chicken or fish.  I will give that a try.  I'm also going to try the hummus recipe on the boards.
I had Mary's Beef Pie and the baked beans recipe over the weekend and they were wonderful.  The Beef Pie is such a comfort food and tastes better than my own shepherd's pie.
Thanks for the ideas.

For garbanzo bean flour, do you use canned beans.  That's the only kind I've ever seen.  Are there any other kind, and where can you find them?  Thanks.

Blessings,
Sylvia

I bought the garbanzo bean flour at our healthfood store already milled.  I haven't used it yet but I bought some cod I plan on using it with.

Do you know if dry beans are available that we can grind ourselves?

Hi Trisha,

You already have a lot of great advice and I agree with my peeps here. I use Bob's Red Mill brand of chick pea flour. I do use it for a breading if I want to make a mock chicken Parm dish for a special occasion. I do agree this is a once in a while treat as it does stall my efforts.

I also use it mixed with an egg and applesauce to make pancakes - sometimes with blueberries. It really hits the spot when you have to have pancakes -- again definitely once in a while. So it is a better choice than having regular processed flour but while your goal is to lose weight, you will have to really monitor the frequency.

You are going to do great!

leisuregranny,

I saw a bag of dry garbanzo beans in my grocery store (Food Lion)
in the Mexican foods bean section.

They also have them at Winco in a bin where you can get as muche or as little as you need.  In addition, our grocery stores carry it in the section where they have pasta they also have dried beans.
