Stevia In The Raw

I have a new friend.
Happened to see a box of Stevia in the Raw at the KMart Pharmacy.
Have been looking for it since someone on the boards mentioned it.
A box of 50 packets was a little over $2.00.
I tried a little in some coffee this morning and it was not bad at all!
I am sure I will be using this one!

I haven't seen that one. I usually shop at Walmart...not K-Mart. The one down the street is so dirty.

Thanks for the post Linda. I will have to look for it. My favorite stevia is something my husband orders through the mail called stevia glycerite (kinda like a syrup) made by NOW brand in a brown bottle. I was getting it at my local health food store but it was extremely expensive. But I really like it because it blends so well in drinks, etc. with much less bitterness than some of the other stevias I have tried. And my husband was able to find it cheaper through one of the supplement companies he buys his supplements through. I will have to look for the stevia you mentioned. That sounds like a reasonable price and that would be handy to keep in my purse. Thanks again. Jerrie

I have always used Splenda when I needed a sweetener....then I found Stevia at my Sam's Club..but I have to tell you, I really don't like it at all. It has a worse taste than the old aspertame used to have. I'm sorry I spent the money on it. I have found that I am very happy using no "sweetener" at all since I have run out of splenda... Is it just me or do others find the taste not so good. Lisa

Since Stevia is supposed to be healthier, I really wanted to try it. I bought the liquid kind but it was way too bitter in coffee. It was Ok in tea. Someone on the boards said they got Stevia in the Raw at WalMart, but I had not seen it at our WalMart. I was at the pharmacy at KMart and was surprised to see it there. I was surprised that it tasted OK.

I had bought truvia and when I made cherry pie and used it yuk it ruined the whole dish. It tastes fine I am told in tea by my friend but when it is put in other things the fruit tasted weird and so did the soup.

Lisa - I don't think Stevia is very good in baked goods. My stevia, the stevia glycerite, works really well with drinks, i.e. tea, coffee, and especially lemonade. If also works well if you want to add just a hit of sweetness to something like soup, salad dressings, etc. Even with the stevia glycerite you have to kind of experiment with the amount you use. Mine blends really well with liquids, but it only takes a tiny bit. On my 8 oz. bottle it says "pleasant tasting herb" and it also says "no bitter aftertaste". Some kinds of stevia do have a bitter aftertaste, especially if you use too much. Of the different stevia brands I have used, this one seems to have the best taste, but stevia doesn't work in every recipe. From what I hear though, it is supposed to be healthy, as it is an herb, whereas Aspartame and Splenda are made of chemicals. Jerrie

put some clothes on that ' raw ' stevia then! hehe *hugs*

Well, from one avid label reader, I was so excited that I actually saw Stevia in the Raw, I failed to read the label.
The first ingredient is Dextrose. :poo:
Says it only has 4 calories per serving which the FDA says is 0 calories.
Guess that is why it was not so bitter.
I will experiment with it a little in cooking and let you know.
Welcome Michelle from Hawaii!!! ;)------->doin the Hula

Good to have you on board!

Welcome Michelle from Hawaii - my hubby and I had our honeymoon at Waikiki in Hawaii 31 years ago. It was soooooo wonderful. Then some years later, he won a five day all expense paid trip to Maui for the two of us from the company he worked at for. That was wonderful too. Hawaii is so beautiful and warm...and we had snow yesterday...and possible more tomorrow...but I'm sitting in my sunroom with my ocean/beach paintings hanging on the wall...lol Jerrie

@Linda RN I bought some Stevia Extract In the Raw.. at Walmart US store... says it contains Maltodextrin, Stevia Extract (Rebiana) and 0 calories... from the little research I did it is not quite the same as maltodextrin but?? I have not tried it yet..
I like Truvia a lot I think the thing is not to add too much.. for a big bowl of berries I use maybe half teaspoon at most.. I find it draws the juice out of the berries..

@ LULU
What I have is Stevia Extract in the Raw but it says the ingredients are Dextrose and Stevia Extract (Rebiana). At the bottom of the side panel, it says: Each serving contains less than 4 calories which the FDA considers dietetically zero
I probably used 1/8 tsp or less in a mug of coffee.

Mine was in green box with Good Housekeeping Seal on it. Maltdextran must be lower in calories than Dextrose.

Do you suppose it might be packaged differently for distribution to Canada and the US? Funny! Pam

Pam

No I just went to the website... the Packets are made with dextrose added while the bag (the loose) is with Maltodextrin....... We do not have this in Canada yet or maybe we do.. We do not have Truvia.. it seems our government is a bit more strict with these things and it takes forever to get them.
http://www.steviaextractintheraw.com/Nu ... Facts.aspxSame as many over the counter meds.. We cannot get here..

Hi Lulu,
I live near International Falls mn. While it may take forever for you to get over the counter drugs approved , I have noticed that the otc drugs on your side of the border are often stronger than we are allowed to buy. I also prefer your vicks salve......so much better than what I can get.
Have a good day
Kris
