This is from an article in today's Vancouver Province Newpaper
All calories are not created equal.
" Some calories require more energy to digest , giving you a bigger bang for your buck" says Leslie Bonci registered dietitian, Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and author of the upcoming book The Active Calorie Diet
Some tips from the book:
-eat plenty of low fat protein, as digesting these foods requires the most calorie burn, just keep choices healthy
-Focus on fibre, as fibre rich foods place second on the active calorie list, load up on fruits and vegtables
-go for chewy, your mouth, the first stop in the digestive process will have to work harder, choose whole fruit vs fruit juice, toss extra beans or broccoli into soups and stir fries
-add spice, including such items as crushed peppers, wasabi and hot sauce at most likely will burn and extra 10-20 calories a day thanks to a compound called capsaicin, not a lot, but it adds up over time. If you can't tolerate spice, try cinnamon, garlic,or cloves
-drink green tea to take advantage of a metabolism revving substance in tea leaves
-cook more, opening a package burns zero calories, much less than cooking from scratch!
