Re Stevia

What exactly is Stevia, anyway? I'd never seen or heard that word until coming to this website. I did see some in a local store here, but almost fainted when I learned the price.........$21.95 for a box of 50 packets!!!!!!!!! I've finished up all the Equal in the house (whic I've used for years)and am now using just Splenda, for the time being. If the price I found on Stevia is the norm, I'll sure not be switching over to that. What's supposed to be the big advantage to Stevia, anyway?
