Weight lifting and LDL

Post by javabean »

Hi everyone.  I am new on the forum here.  I've been a lowcarber on and off for a number of years.  In the past 6 months, I've hit low carb fairly intensely and have also been much more into fitness.  6 months ago I started off low carb again at 245 lbs and not feeling very good.  Years ago I lost nearly 60 pounds on low carb and then gained almost all of it back over time.  Low carb is a very difficult diet to maintain for me for any length of time.  I am down 40 lbs again in the past several months.  I'm feeling better and stronger.  I have hit the weights and cardio fairly hard.  I am at the point where I need the extra carbs to produce a good solid workout with heavier weights.  This is nearly impossible to do with low carb.  Pre-workout snacks are rough for low carb as they don't allow you to lift heavier weights.  You are just wiped out fast. So, looking around I found this site again.  I actually have two of Roger's books and read them about 2.5 years back. I am somewhat familiar with the concept.  I just never really did more with the books other than scarf some of the recipes therein.  Some of those recipes are excellent, too.

My question is if there are any others on this forum who do any lifting and daily moderate cardio? If so, what kinds of results have you seen with LDL?  Do you find you can get enough protein on LDL with only eating meat at lunchtime, or dinnertime as the case may be?

At this point, I am sick of low carb again.  It has helped me lose a good deal of weight but I am craving things like grapes, apples, oranges, and other starchy vegetables.  I especially LOVE popcorn.  I buy the microwave popcorn from Whole Foods and it only contains popcorn and sea salt.  It's wonderful...but I'll gain 2 pounds from eating a bag of it on low carb.  I've done it...even as I work out.  I gain from it.  Also, I love beans...all kinds of beans.  Taco soup is one of my luxury foods. It's not too carby but I prefer it with corn.  I usually don't eat it with corn, though.  I love the pea soup recipe, too.  I think the biggest luxury I have is having cream with my coffee, though.  I know that's a no-no on LDL.  I've tried it with soy milk but can't stand it.

Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself and ask the question about weightlifting.

It sounds like you would do really well on LDL.  I went through a low-carb, "gotta have my cream" phase a while back, years before LDL.  When I went off the low-carb diet, I gradually phased off the cream and went to black coffee.  I didn't need the indulgence because I was allowing myself other things again that I had denied cravings for (healthy things like fruit, corn, etc.).  Lately I've been phasing out of coffee altogether.  I am loving tea these days.  What I found with LDL is that I enjoyed so many other things (fruit smoothies, popcorn, corn, all the yummy recipes....) that those replaced the cream as my indulgence on this plan.  And, if you eat all the allowable LDL foods until full any cravings you have for the other foods will go away.  REALLY, things I used to crave and "have to have" have no pull on me anymore.  Also, the new book says you can have lean protein anytime you need it.  You should have no problem with your lifting.

Blessings,
Julie

Well, tomorrow I am going to do my heavy lifting for the week.  I have two sessions per week of heavy lifting(other sessions are for reps).  I'll try LDL tomorrow.  I am having two apples and a banana for breakfast...along with black coffee, then for lunch I made 3 bean salad(wax beans, green beans, kidney beans, and a can of corn, plus an onion 1/4 cup green pepper, and 1/3 cup olive oil, and half cup of red wine vinegar).  I'll have some of that for lunch instead of the sliced turkey.  I'll see how my weight lifting goes tomorrow night.  I think it will go well.  When I do at least 60 grams of carbs I find I can lift heavier weight during a session.  Now, bear in mind I usually have about 23-30 grams of carbs per day.  Probably a nightmare scenario for an LDLer.  I am one that packs on weight when I don't exercise.

Cricadoodle is the expert on cardio and weight training.
I used to think I had to do alot of heavy exercise to stay slim. Had reinforcement for that idea because as soon as I quit, I gained. But I have been loosing on LDL and not lifting much more weight than my fingers to the keyboard!
You can loose on LDL eating just the way Roger outlined without exercise.
But I am sure the weight loss is much faster when you do exercise. I am sure that is why Katie has lost 140lbs in a year and I have only lost 49. But I am not in such a hurry now-a-days!
Read an interesting article from Dr. Mercola the other day about getting protein immediately after a workout. I did not pay too much attention to it because I was not planning on a rigorous workout anytime soon, but you can do a search for it. Of course the purpose of the article is to sell a product, but he does give some biological/chemical, whatever over my head info that you might understand, LOL  ;D

Wow!  I must have missed something big in all these years.  Wasn't it that you had to eat your heavy meal, meat, just at lunchtime...or  just one time during the day?  Wasn't that the purpose of the name of the diet?  You had your heavy meal, with meat, at the lunch time period during the day?  I must have read those books longer ago than I thought.

Is this info about eating all the lean meat you need in the latest book?  I'm seeing things like oatmeal, brown rice, and such being OK on the forum now.  It has evolved quite a bit I think.

I surely hate to gain back any weight after having struggled for 6 months to take this much off again.  That's downright scary for me.  I was even extremely strong through the holidays!!!  SCARRRY!!!  The thought of it makes me physically ill, really.  Another scary thing is that my blood pressure is perfect now and so is my blood workup.  I had been in the high cholesterol, high bp, ranks a while back and had a fairly unnerving NMR test.  So, anything that jacks with that worries me. My saving grace might be that if I can lift bigger weights, and increase my cardio here a bit, that I might not gain.  I need more carbs for sure now, though.  It is worth an experiment.

So, stay off the scale for at least a month...until your body has the chance to change. Just TRUST that your body WILL change and it will be GLAD to be eating the Let's Do Lunch way...especially since you do weights and need carbs!

The evolving science of Let's Do Lunch now says that you can eat all the acceptable heavy proteins you want (including lean red meat) whenever you want them, as well as all the unprocessed starchy carbs you want whenever you want them and all the sweet fresh fruits you want whenever you want them…and still lose all the weight you want!

Just relax, God bless and enjoy,
