bugged by popcorn!

Post by snowbirdie »

Hi All,
A while ago my daughter gave me a whirley pop pop corn pan thats goes on top of stove. So today i decided to make some. I have a 3 pound bag of popcon so      I thought oh boy lots of popcorn.  OH it smelled so good! BUT when I dumped it out into a bowl there was shiney black oval things in bottom of pan. BUGS! I never saw bugs in popcorn before. So it all went into the garbage. The bugs must be inside each kernal cause when I looked through the unpopped corn I could see no bugs but there they were  when the corn was popped.  So I don't know. I guess when I buy pop corn again I will have to get the kind that comes in a jar. OH yum!  Popped black beetles! Andrew Zimmern would surley be proud of me!   Bugs on the menu!

OMG!  What brand of popcorn was it?  Did you have it a long time or did you just buy it? I have had bugs in flour before because I had it a long time and we had a really humid summer -- have learned to store my flour in an air tight container.  But, I have never had bugs in popcorn and I hope never have to find some.  That would grouse me out so much I think I would have a hard time ever eating popcorn again.

Hi Roger,
Are you best pals with Andrew Zimmern? He eats those chocolate covered bugs!  lol

This is just a FYI for those that would like to know the best way to store popcorn....CQ

If stored properly, popcorn can last for years. There have been thousand-year-old popcorn kernels (preserved by the Peruvian Indians) that still popped.

If you buy popcorn in bulk, proper storage is a necessity in order to prevent mold and bugs. Popcorn kernels should be stored in an air-tight container. It is recommended to put a couple of bay leaves inside the container to prevent bugs. The air-tight container should be kept in a cool, dark area. Do not store in a refrigerator, freezer or open container, as this will dry out the popcorn kernels, making them unpoppable.

My popcorn popped just fine  so did the bugs! I had the popcorn for a few weeks .It was in a plastic store bag. So when I opened it it went into a jar. I never had bugs in popcorn before didn't even realize they would go after popcorn.  So from now on I won't buy popcor unless it is being stored and sold in a glass or plastic jar. But popcorn does get a stale taste if kept too long and they also dry out to where they don't pop well.

 Bugs in Popcorn! How shocking!
How ever am I right in thinking that the reason the bugs like it is because it is healthy?
Just thinking.... :)

You are so right Bethann,
Even the bugs are smart enough to know processed foods are a death trap and they stay out.
