northern minnesota on the canadian border. I buy smart balance margarine. Butter is 5 dollars a pound.. I just don't know where the prices are going. Nothing is affordable. Im sure glad I have cans of dry beans and peas as that is what we will be living on. They are so good anyway. I don't want to complain.  Kris has a bunch of dry beans also so we will be ok. soon it will be garden time and then fresh produce again.

Wow those prices are outrageous $20.00 for a chicken that should be about $5.00, our fruit prices here in upstate, ny have gone over the top but so far meat is stable.

Those prices really are outrageous.  I bought some free range chickens from someone last month for $8.00 a piece -- that was like really good quality chicken, though.  Other chicken is much cheaper than that.  I don't think too much about the prices and thank God He provides for us, but those prices would make me wince!

Now, Wanda, what century are you living in?  Avocadoes here are like $1.00 a piece.  I never heard of such cheap prices this century.  You must be a time traveller!!  :D  I want to shop where you shop, but I think the price of gas will keep me far away!  :stop:

My husband is talking of wanting to do a garden, but I think that means me doing a garden -- and I quit trying to do all that work just to feed our neighborhood rabbits.  My husband was talking about shooting them, but these rabbits are loved by the little widow ladies who feed them all the time.  I told him I was going to have to put my foot down on this one.  They are actually tame rabbits -- or their ancestors were -- someone let go after an Easter most likely.  They keep reproducing, but we always have just two or three around here.  So, I told him he'd have to build a fence around the garden, that is the only way we could have one.  That is doable.  I don't know when it can happen, though.

Crick, I shop the adds  first.  We have a store called Aldi that has great produce prices. It is a rather new store---it has been here probably 5 years.  It probably saves me at least $25 a week.  5# of navel oranges were $1.99, and they are delicious.  Cucumbers are $.39  tangerines are a bag for $2.99  Avocados were $1.00 this week.  I could go on and on.  There are specials every week, but some things have stayed the same prices like bananas.  They are always $.39 a lb. Almost every thing is at least $.20 cheaper than the other stores. Their canned goods have great prices.  I buy by the case. I pack my own groceries in the bags I take with me, I put a quarter in to use the cart, get it back when  I put the cart back.  Their parking lot  is never cluttered.   JF

Crickadoodle,

There's an Aldi in Tampa, too. You save money by bagging your own groceries, etc. That's how they are able to pass down the savings to their shoppers.

There is an Aldis about 10 mins from me and I have been in there a couple of times to look around, I wasn't to impressed, really didn't have much to choose from. There is another one in the next city from us and is about 15-20 minutes max from my house. i think I will go there tomorrow and check that store out, maybe it's bigger. With the prices of things lately, I would like to find that has a little better deals than the cub or rainbow stores, cuz I DO NOT buy produce at walmart, ours around here are terrible for that.

We don't have that store here, but I love the idea of 25 cents a cart and then getting the quarter back when you picked up the cart!  They save on not having to hire so many workers!  Smart idea!  Avocadoes are $1.00 here too, but I think you'd said they were like 29 cents or something ridiculous like that.  Must have gone up in price.

Our Aldi store is well stocked most of the time.  I see a whole lot of upper middle class there as well as people who has government help.  They will not take a credit card, nor a check.  I bought all shades of the Avocado when $.29, so I still have two.  One is out ripening.  Will eat with bean soup later this evening.  The checkers also stock the shelves.  They make good wages, have benefit packages, and are always busy.  It's a great place for me to shop.  Sorry, you  have not had the same experience, Rodie. It took Country girl and my daughter-in-law a little longer to like the store, but are they hooked!!!  *hug*  JF

JF,
I went to the Aldi's in Burnsville today(only about 15,maybe 20 mins from my house) It was NOTHING the one that is only about 5 mins from here. It was so well organized, clean and neat and a much bigger store.I bought cukes, cabbage, peppers, grapes, bananas, raisins and a couples of other things.I only spent $17.00
I will for sure be going there again.I'm glad I decided to try another store. The only thing I couldn't do is get my quarter back, couldn't get in out of the machine, lol! but that's ok,figured I save by not going to the regular grocery store I usually go to.

Great, Rodie.  Ours is sooo clean.  Prices are good.  This week, gala apples are $.99 for 3#.  They are good tasting, and great for cooking in micro with raisins and apple pie spice, a little Splenda, and 2T water.  Sooo good. *hug* JF

This is the newsletter that I received this morning from Dr. Mercola....The seven foods that are a waste of money. I know a lot of you are on his email list but for those that aren't...this is for you.

For years I have bought my potatoes, raisins, grapes organic, as I remember Dr. Colbert stating that they have some of the highest amounts of pestisides.  I think he said potatoes have the highest (for vegetables) and grapes have the highest (for fruits) of pesticides.  If I can't get organic potatoes, I don't like use the skins, in light of what Dr. Colbert said.  Jerrie :)

I peel everything that's not organic for that very reason.

I have enjoyed Dr. Mercola's news letter; great info.  I use a whole lot of fresh fruits and veggies.  I wash everything or peel.  Thanks for giving us so much info  the two last years, because it has changed many of my ideas. By the way I feel, I must be doing something right.  We ate out yesterday, so this morning and even before I went to bed, my fingers retained water---just too much MSG.   and  :)  JF

Judie -- I'm so glad you are able to stock up on some chickens -- that $20 chicken you posted about really worried me!  I'll be over for lunch with a big container of bean soup -- OK?  Wouldn't it be fun if we really could do that?  Everyone could contribute every day and we'd all eat really well and continue to lose weight -- or maintain slender bodies.

Hi Crick, Wouldn't that be fun!  But We live at the end of the good old U.S.A..  I can look down street and into Canada.  Boy u bet I got some chickens I have 3 AND tomorrow I shall buy 3 more. Each bird makes 3 meals for us. The men eat the dark meat and I eat the white. The doggies get there share of the dark meat. Thank G-D I found some cheaper as chicken is our basic protein. Come on over and we will enjoy chicken with beans!
