Hungry Girl Show on Cooking Channel

Post by JerrieH »

Does anyone watch a show on Cooking Channel called Hungry Girl on Saturdays?  I've been watching the show for the last month and while not all of her recipes are LDL friendly, many are.  What she does is to try to create more volume in recipes with little calories, low fat, etc., by adding lots of fruits, veggies, beans, lean meat or by adding pumpkin instead of oil to baked good, etc.  She also has a lot of good weight loss tips. And her website has all of the episodes from t.v.  Some really good ideas on her show that are LDL friendly.  Here is the link to the show I watched today and all of the recipes she made were LDL friendly on that show.

http://www.hungry-girl.com/show/episodes/fill-er-up

I copied the link from the website and pasted it here, but for some reason it is not blue, like links are supposed to be.  Don't know how to do that I guess.

Jerrie,
Her recipes are very good and she always has a sub for a fattening ingredient.

Thanks Charlotte for letting me know.  I guess the link stays black in the box where you type it and it doesn't turn blue until it is sent to where it is supposed to go on the website after you post it.  Thanks again.  Jerrie :)

I've seen the show but I wasn't impressed. She's more retro by reducing calories and fat. Fat isn't bad for you if it comes from a good source. Plus, she also feels that bread, pasta, rice and potatoes are good for you if they're whole grain or cooked with little fat...not true. I don't care what anyone says...they add fat to your body if you're wheat sensitive like most people but just don't know it. And, I only feel that sweet potatoes are healthy for weight loss. I know RT has been doing his experiment but I know how my body reacts to white potatoes...FAT!

If the wheel wasn't broken then why did he have to try to fix it. There's going to be a lot of people that will gain on baked white potatoes and quit LDL.

I've actually taken Dr. Mercola's advice by eliminating all bread, pasta, rice, potatoes (except sweet potatoes which he recommends) and corn (corn on the cob, frozen corn in recipes, corn thins and popcorn) from my diet and I'm losing much faster now than when I first started LDL. I still make corn on the cob for one of my sons but I don't eat it.

CQ, isn't it wonderful that we can each taylor LDL to fit our own body's needs. So glad you are able to make LDL work for you.

Ollie,

Yes, it is...my son loves corn and doesn't seem to have a weight loss issue like I do from eating it...that's a good thing....his skin is without any acne which I'm happy about....I had a major acne problem when I was a teenager....He just seems to be one that can eat it without problems which is a good thing and without any acne problems like most teenagers these days.

I agree with you about potatoes and meats.  What ever happened to eating a variety of green and colorful healthy veggies?  Meat once a day is healthy.  I like the red book plan and I've not been able to talk about any other plan.  I don't think people can lose weight that way--I couldn't, so I would not be telling the truth if I told people they could.  I have to tell them how I found the balance and feel so good from not having all that animal protein and gluten  and starchy products in me.  From reading the food journals, some people are following eating meat  at every meal.  I want well balanced meals.  Being healthy is very important.  I hope people find weight and health success.  I have a friend who is small, but she even says that she would rather have her calories in sweets.  She does eat a few raw veggies.  She is determined to stay small.  At my big meal today, I had lima beans, peas, and corn in a mixture.  I had a delicious sirloin patty on corn thins, fresh tomatoes, fresh onion, and dill pickles. My plate looked beautiful.  Then I had pudding that I made--no fat milk and splenda-- with fresh mashed strawberries over it.  I only added pudding after I got to goal.  It doesn't cause any problem for me.  I only make it about every couple weeks. Every one has to do what is best for them. Thanks for all the info you all give me.  I've made many changes in my diet because of it.  :)  JF

CQ - Like I mentioned previously, not all of the Hungry Girl Episode recipes are LDL friendly (maybe even most aren't), but a number of them are and others can be adjusted with slight modifications to be LDL friendly.  Plus she has quite a few tips for healthy snacks, some LDL approved, some not.  I remember one episode where she made pizza, by putting pizza toppings on a thin sliced piece of chicken, instead of pizza crust or pizza toppings on oven roasted eggplant slices instead of crust.  I think she has quite a few good snack and recipe ideas.  You just have to pick and choose which recipes would work with LDL and on her last episode every recipe was LDL friendly, soups and fruit salads.  Jerrie :)

Jerrie,

Then I guess I missed those shows. All the ones I've seen have contained non LDL recipes.

Mary,

I also read a newsletter that Dr. Weil sent out that said we should only be eating 5.5 oz of protein a day. Well, I'm still going to be eating my 8 oz steak at lunch but that's it. I don't do well eating fruit for dinner unless it's watermelon or grapefruit. So, I only have a small salad or a bowl of soup.

Jerry, I know what you mean, some of them are unsuitable and some just need slight modification.

Then there are others likeCrazy Calypso Salad which consists of spinach leaves ,shrimp, mango and avocado, with a dressing of rice vinegar, lime juice, splenda and cayenne pepper. That one looked really good to me :)

I look  at quite a few different websites for new recipes, sometimes it is a long search for ones that are LDL friendly, but they are out there. There are lots of good recipes on our boards too of course.

Cameron - I, too, find LDL-friendly recipes from various sources: recipe websites, cookbooks, cooking shows, LDL red book, LDL recipe cards, LDL message boards (many good soup recipes there).  It's fun to look through my many cookbooks and find the ones that are either LDL-friendly, or can be made so very easily.  Jerrie  :)

I agree with that. I eat it once a day and sometimes a extra hard boiled egg but I know Im not hungry for more meat protein after that. If anything I crave the veggy protein.

RT - thank you for that info.  I have been eating only one heavy protein per day (most always at lunch).  I do usually have a bean protein (usually in a soup) for dinner.  It is so nice that eating the LDL foods cause you to become less and less hungry and therefore automaticilly lose weight.  And it is so nice that I don't crave the junk food anymore since I have been doing LDL.  I thank the Lord and you for sharing this weight loss plan.  Jerrie :)

I totally agree with JF's comment.  I'll keep following the guidelines in the red book regardless of the changes that are being made in the next edition.  I eat lean hamburger (usually mixed half and half with ground chicken or turkey) only in casseroles -- for example, Little Mary's Beef Potato Pie.  Steak is a treat for me and I eat it infrequently.

I am still following the plan in the red book with meat protein once a day...preferably at lunch. I do not eat white potatoes and only eat baked sweet potatoes once or twice a month!!

I am on maintenance and have been for 3 months. Following an eating plan has never been this easy before....I love LDL!!
