Roger,
One of the goals of LDL is to kick the addiction to sugar and become addicted to fruit sugar. However, I notice in your book that some of the products you list contain sugar. Ketchup often contains the frankenfood corn syrup, which seems to garner much discussion on whether it's OK or bad, and sugar. Even Bush kidney beans contains added sugar. Almost any 3 bean salad I find in the store contains added sugar, too. You had mentioned eating barbecued chicken in the book. Almost all barbecue sauces have sugar in them. I have noticed that many canned corn products, even like Green Giant fiesta corn contains added sugar. Kroger has a great store brand fiesta corn, though, without sugar. If one is eating sugared products how can the addiction to sugar be kicked? Maybe I am missing something in the program here.
I see you have a recipe in the book, though, that would add stevia to the 3 bean salad. I haven't tried that one but I might. Stevia often adds a licorice taste to food but it might be a good one to try in this one. I have tried to do stevia when possible because I don't think that Splenda is such a wholesome product. It's a chlorinated product(some of the carbons in sugar are replaced by chlorine molecules).

Re: Sugary Products
And here is the thing. I'm a good ol' Southern boy and love pinto beans(oh and cornbread). But, often to make them taste really nice I have to add a lot of salt to the bean pot. So, I switched to a light salt that has about 50% potassium rather than sodium in it. Excess salt can be pretty bad.

why don't you try experimenting with other things that will give your food flavor?....jalapeno peppers, crushed red pepper...stuff like that...if you don't use too much, you'll get flavor without too much heat....and experimenting with different seasonings will give you a nice change of flavors..........niki

Re: Sugary Products
It's a good suggestion, Niki. In fact, tonight I made the bean soup recipe in Roger's book and it was pretty good. No salt...crushed red pepper, whatever salt they added to the canned beans, two cans of beans, onion, can of tomotoes, chives, and black pepper. I used chicken stock(nonfat and low salt) instead of the water the recipe asked for.
It was too good a recipe...as I ate the whole thing. :-) But, I was so full I didn't have any desire or room for the strawberries my wife put out. I did snack on some ORB Smart Pop and grapes when I got home, though.

hi...i'm glad to hear it helped...let me know if you come up with any new spices or spice combinations..i love spicy food..and eating all these beans soups is my substitute for the comfort foods i used to eat...you should also try dried beans because you can combine different beans for variety......and use plenty of vegetables(carrots, onions, celery)sauteing them in olive oil first.....niki

Even in Roger's bean soup recipe, in the book, I plop a few tblspoons of EVO in it for flavor. It's pretty tasty.
