I Need Prayers Too
Old Morton's Salt ad: "When it rains it pours"
All week I have been struggling with my emotions: renewed grief over my mother's death triggered by my friend's recent move to hospice care.
I have made a few awful food choices. I know I COULD have gone and bought more fruit, but I chose to eat ice cream twice.
Still, in spite of some poor choices I have MOSTLY stuck with LDL.
THEN, last night I got home from work and found my dog injured. One of his legs was hanging limp. My regular vet's office was already closed for the weekend. The emergency vet office is always 2 or 3 times the cost of a normal vets office and generally they'll just hold your pet until you can get him to your regular vet's office the next work day.
SO I started calling vet's offices in the phone book and found one that was still open (barely). He got 'Reo in and checked him out. Felt like his right front leg may have been fractured. Sedated 'Reo for the night and took x-rays this morning.
Yes, it is a serious break that a regular vet is not equipped to handle. This vet is keeping 'Reo sedated and safe until the Orthopedic vet opens on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday). I'll have to pay this vet ~$200 for what he has done to help us over the 3-day weekend. And then I'll owe the orthopedic vet ~$1200 for what he'll have to do to help my poor boy.
After the surgery 'Reo will have to be crated for 6 - 12 weeks while his bones heal around a pin.
"Reo is 10 years old. Our best guess is that my brother's 2 year old, StarrDust probably body-slammed him. We've seen her do it before to 'Reo and to Bo when she has gotten over-excited. Have not yet been successful at teaching her differently. Luckily we have a good set-up with excess fencing and gates in the yard so that once 'Reo is on his feet again, we'll be able to separate Starr from 'Reo when we have to leave them home alone.

Hi N.J.
I am sorry you are having such a rough week. Wish i were there to give you a hug. Of course you will be in my prayers, and your dog too.
May G-d bless you

Little Miss Starr has no idea that what she does is hurtful. She is just SO HAPPY and EXUBERANT! She is certain that everyone in her world is as thrilled with life as she is.
Poor 'Reo looked awful when I sat with him yesterday. He was groggy from the pain meds. And when he doesn't feel good the whites of his eyes get SO RED.
Because this is Sunday I won't get to see him today. Tomorrow is a holiday. I'll get to visit him but we won't be able to move him to the orthopedic vets office until Tuesday morning. But by then it will be three and a half days since his elbow was broken. The vet that is keeping him right now said that the surgeon will be set up for surgery as soon as 'Reo arrives, because of the delay; they don't want the bone to start healing wrong.

Keep praying.
Decisions I thought were made, in light of new info, are no longer firm. The surgery may be out, due to age. We are now also looking at amputation or putting him to sleep.

Oh, Enjae,
I know you must be devistated. Our little four legged children are so precious & it's so hard to see them suffer. My prayers are with you, my friend.
Love,
Carolyn

Re: I Need Prayers Too
Praise God!
We've gotten second and third opinions today.
Both vets today disagreed with the first vet's suggestion that 'Reo's bones might not heal. They both said that due to his advanced age he might be SLOW to heal but that he'd DEFINITELY heal.
'Reo is still being kept safe and crated, but at his regular vet's office instead of the one who kept him over the weekend. They know him and love him there! He is on a regimen of mild sedation and pain-killers; they are monitoring his condition.
I will pick him up and take him to the surgeon's office on Wednesday morning.
Please, everyone who has prayed for me during this time of difficult decisions, continue to pray. Firstly, in THANKSGIVING for helping me to come to the right decision for my furry-boy, and secondly, for guiding the hands of the surgeon and for speeding 'Reo's healing.

Re: I Need Prayers Too
Yes, of course, EnJae, we will remember you and your Reo in prayer. God loves the animals too! After all, he made them too! I am sure they also "warm" His heart. I believe that my Quaker Parrot (Kiwi) is with the Lord. I had taught him to praise the Lord and I believe he is waiting for me while praising God all the time. A God who loves the birds enough to attend EACH one of their funerals loves His whole creation. I know HE love us as humans the most, but I know He love the animals and birds just as much.
Love,
Jeanne

Re: I Need Prayers Too
I just read your posting and gasped out loud when I read that your dog had a broken bone. I am so sorry!!! Anyone that has pets knows how attached we get to them. What kind of dog is he? It is unfortunate that had happend, especially with the timing of a long weekend coming. Ouch. I'm sure Reo feels more of your pain and sadness than he does for himself. Dogs are so incredable.
Your comment of Reo's cousin,
Your comment of Reo's cousin,
Isn't it wonderful to see life through the eyes of a pet? We should all be thrilled with life. Even on the bad days, there is always joy in the horizon!EnJae wrote:"She is just SO HAPPY and EXUBERANT! She is certain that everyone in her world is as thrilled with life as she is.

Re: I Need Prayers Too
I have 'Reo home for the night.
He has to be at the surgeon's office at 7:30am tomorrow; and our vet's office, where he was staying, doesn't open until 8am. He has pain pills and is resting in a crate.

Re: I Need Prayers Too
NJ,
I am SOOOOOO glad to hear you got a second opinion. I was a dog groomer for 10 years and worked in a vets office. While dogs ALWAYS recover from amputation much better than humans, it is almost always the last choice. When I was reading the amputation post I was thinking to myself....His age? They want to amputate because of his age? NO!!! I'm SOOOOOOOO SOOOOOO happy your regular vet disagrees!
I'm also very happy to hear that he's got a doc and staff who love him. I am keeping you both in my prayers hon. Having lost my dog of 14 years a couple of years ago, I understand the close bond that we all develop with our pets. I claim in Jesus name that you and your fur kid will both be home and on the path to healing in no time. ((((((((((Hugs))))))))))) Keep us posted sweet girl. We love ya!
