Hello -- Virgil Brinkman back online (as in the movie, The Abyss).

I just got home & curled up with a nice comforting bowl of garlic butter beans, hot popcorn & green tea, and wanted to touch base with my dear friends.  All of you are so caring and wonderful, after reading your posts I feel like I have been surrounded with warm, loving hugs from each of you.  I only have one request --PLEASE, NO MORE BREAKING HEARTS ON OUR BEHALF!  God's grace is all sufficient for our needs.  All the same, I have printed out every one of your messages & will read them to Neil tomorrow.  Veronica, the song is incredible, and very timely!  How can I hear the melody?  I try to read something inspirational or uplifting to him every day and all your words will certainly do the trick!  How blessed are we --  to have all of you AND the Lord caring for us!  I wish I could figure out how to make these words really giant like Jeanne does......
[glow=red,2,300]THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU[/glow]

Neil's recovery is actually going very well.  His kidneys still aren't working, so he started hemodialysis (sp?) yesterday.  It made him feel so much better.  He got up without assistance at FOUR A.M. today, started getting himself in & out of bed & to the bathroom without assistance, & walked the length of the unit with a walker.  When I arrived at 7:30 this morning, he was sitting up in bed & scarfing up his breakfast like a starving man.  This was the first time he has fed himself and the first time he has taken more than three tiny bites of his food.  I was so thrilled I did a happy dance in his room!  The doctors are considering discharging him to recover at home prior to starting chemotherapy.

It has been incredibly easy to stay on program at the hospital.  The food is tasty and there are always loads of LDL acceptable choices -- when I can find time to eat.  Nightime eating is no problem - I just fall face first into bed as soon as I get home.  I am tired, but I feel really fulfilled being able to be there to care for him.  We are learning together how to accomplish our mutual needs, under controlled hospital conditions, so we'll know what to expect when we get home.

I wanted to be at the hospital yesterday a.m. when they put the dialysis catheter into his neck (horrible, but necessary), so we had church in his room yesterday and it was pretty cool.  I took in a hymnal and we sang uplifting songs (well, I sang & he listened, however he did mouth the words to Victory in Jesus ;)) we prayed, read devotionals & talked about how we are so incredibly blessed and all our needs are being met.

I think people believe I am in denial, or crazy, or whatever, because I'm not torn up over Neil's illness.  I have been feeling a little guilty or puzzled that I am not falling apart.  But it suddenly came to me during the altar call at church last week what's been happening -- why I'm okay.  The Lord has been preparing us for this trial for the past year by flooding our life with scores of praying, loving, caring, generous, Spirit-filled people who are taking care of us.  Now my precious Lord has filled me with such joy and peace and trust, I don't have any room in my heart for fear or sorrow.  I take absolutely NO credit for this -- it's all due to God's grace in action and His perfect timing.  So the best way I can think of to thank everyone is to pray the same blessings for you at your point of greatest need.

Love to all & good night,
Gwen

Hey Gwen....I'm not sure if this will work or not, but you may be able to hear a clip of the song by going to the group's website. (my puter is so old and decrepit it won't work!!)

http://www.smokymountaingospel.com/_art ... _music.htm

They have 3 different CD's out. The latest one is The Only Thing That Matters. The song # is #9.

You'd probably also like their other CD: Journey of Faith. Listen to the different clips.

My deepest apologies, Gwen. I have not clicked the "unread posts" for way too long. I had no idea that you were going through all of this. You sound like you are really strong and have a healthy attitude about everything. You truly are a blessed angel. God be with you all.

Thanks to everyone for all the loves and prayers!

Neil came home from the hospital last Thursday and is taking some time to settle in.  He's still uncomfortable and cannot sleep through the night, but I slept around the clock for two days.  It was like two total luxuries rolled into one:  having him home AND SLEEPING!!!  He is getting stronger daily.  Dialysis is helping remove pounds of fluids that are still accumulated in his tissues.

He finally had his first real live poop in over a month!!!  YEA!!!  That's pretty good news for someone who recently lost over a foot of his colon.  AND there are signs that his kidneys are beginning to take over.  He's making more than a liter of urine every day.  So that's all good news.

Love to all,
Gwen

Gwen,
It sounds like God is bringing Neil back to full health.  Praise His name forever!!!  God wants all of us, our body, soul and spirit to be in perfect alignment with the perfection of His Kingdom and He is always working toward that end. What a mighty God we serve!  I pray that you and Neil will be like two "kids" soon, just having fun and laughing (in your skinny body!)  God bless you.

Gwen, this is wonderful news!  And I know that having him home (even though he's still recovering) is a load off of your mind.  Please remember not to neglect GWEN, ok?

Hugs to you, my friend...

Hi Gwen,

I've been away from the boards this week and I just now read this thread.  ((((((((HUGS))))))))  You are absolutely right.  There is NOTHING to big for our God to handle.  I will be praying for Neils full recovery also.  Please don't forget to take care of you as the others have said.  We are all here for you and standing strong in faith and belief that Neil and you both soon will be back on the road to full and total health.  I'm so happy God has given you the peace and grace to walk through.  Blessings to you dear.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU  to all our wonderful friends.  We're still hanging in there -- the Lord is keeping us strong, and blessings are flooding in!!!

God has DEFINITELY opened a window and poured us out a blessing where there is NOT ROOM ENOUGH TO RECEIVE IT !!!  He is making us a living witness to HIS power, grace and merciful care and provision.  We constantly are flooded with love and support from all directions.  It is overwhelming.  I have filled a spiral notebook with a visitors log of visits, calls and gifts.  Now the flowers are slacking off and the FOOD and MONEY and offers of SERVICES are pouring in!!!  (gotta love that AFLAC!)

I am taking care of myself, after a fashion, but most days are still filled with filing forms & claims & Dr. visits & "patient" care.  :)  My blood work is still showing signs of steady improvement in many areas due to Let's Do Lunch.  Yeah!  I'm having a little more trouble staying on program with all the goodies rolling in almost daily.  Not necessarily with cravings, but with temptations.  Many times when I've been overtired I have found myself eating a big spoonful of this or that while I'm dishing up or cleaning up afterward, without any real desire to eat whatever it is I'm poking into my mouth.  It sounds weird, but a big strong mug of hot green tea calms my appetite, satisfies cravings & saves me every time.  Then I eat some beans!

I keep the soaking pot and the crock pot full of beans at all times, Niki.  Garbanzos are my faves.  I'm not tired of 'em yet!!!  It's only by the grace of The Almighty that I could be happy & satisfied & not get tired of eating plain ol' beans week after week.  I don't even care if they are made into soups & stuff.  Sometimes I don't even add salt when I cook them.  Can you imagine!?!  I just leave 'em really plain & freeze half so I can incorporate them into recipes if I ever get around to cooking for myself again.  In the meantime, I just eat 'em plain.  I don't even want chicken or turkey any more.  I do try to eat fish a couple of times a week.  I have a half salmon & two giant grouper fillets in the freezer I need to attack soon.  Maybe I'll cook them on the grill all at the same time & freeze them in individual portions.

Must go now.  Much love to ALL of YOU!  Keep those prayers and hugs rolling in!

Love, Gwen

Hi Gwen,

I've been away and haven't read up on all the posts.  I was just wondering how Neil is doing and how you are doing?  You are such a sweet and wonderful woman.  I pray things are good with you both.  (((((((((((Hugs))))))))))  Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Bringing this back up again to renew our request that you remember us & our doctors in your prayers.  Right now we are frustrated by the fact that the diverse set of medicals professionals that comprise his "treatment team" don't want to talk to each other, but depend on US to carry information back & forth and keep each of them up to speed about what the others are doing.  What's up with that ??????

It's been an eventful summer.  I've written about it all over the place on these boards, but I thought it would be good to bring it back here where it all started.  Between us, we've seen dozens of healthcare professionals and have received updates on existing info, but nothing really new.  Treatment is progressing as originally anticipated.  Neil is currently suffering quite badly from side effects of oral chemo meds.  It's complicated by the fact that he is impacted by three separate diseases (& their treatments) at once (cancer/chemo, renal failure/dialysis, and depression).  Each has a specific set of adverse side effect and, in Neil's case, many of these overlap, making it extremely difficult for US to sort out how much of each problem comes from which disease/treatment.  The doctors are just writing prescriptions willy-nilly to mitigate the symptom of the day without taking in the big picture.

Please believe with us that, if it is His will, that Almighty God will move supernaturally in this situation to cause a comprehensive, whole-person treatment plan to be created.  The current scatter-shot approach is making me absolutely

Gwen
