Yup, Doreen.  Definitely time for some new pictures of you!  That is such a great feeling -- when people notice what you're doing.  My therapist, Mike, is the only one who tells me he can see a difference in me.  It is very motivating, when I go into his office wearing fitted clothes and he says, "So Gwen -- you're smaller each time I see you!  How are you feeling about your success?"  THAT'S the kind of reinforcement that makes you want to keep trying.  It's cool that he gets that.

I used to hide the fact that I was trying to lose weight.  I had a paranoid fear (not unfounded) that if I mentioned a weight loss, someone would pantomime behind my back, "WHERE ? ? ?".  A few years ago Michelle and I were coming out of City Hall and a skateboarder loitering outside said, "What is it - Take Your Cow to Work Day?"  Even last week, a careless and indifferent wheelchair transport driver had tangled up the seatbelt restraints.  After I asked him three times to change the belt that was cutting into my neck, he finally did, grudgingly.  As he climbed out of the van he mumbled, "...just because you're so fat."   It's hard to believe people can be so incredibly cruel.

(After I posted this I asked the Lord why I was so moved write it down and not delete it as being too heavy a topic for such a beautiful day.  I felt like He encouraged me by telling me that my responsibility was not to worry about what other people think.  But it is important to have the memory of what they did to me so I can forgive them.  HE is responsible for them.  HE did not give me LDL as a tool to please other people, but for MY benefit, to HIS glory.  So when I lose weight with Let's Do Lunch, it is not to impress other people, but so my testimony will glorify HIS kingdom.)

OKAY - so I hereby officially forgive all the incredibly insensitive and cruel people who have hurt me by their comments, or lack of comments, about my weight and/or size.  I pray that the memory of this forgiveness will be refreshed every time one of those memories surfaces.  I ask the Lord to give me courage and wisdom to ensure that all my future references and memories of successful weight loss will come with HIS praises attached!  In Jesus name, AMEN!)

However, I didn't come here to take a walk down the valley of the shadow of  *evil*.

I came here to announce:  << fanfare:  doot do do DOOT do do DOOT DO DOOOOOOO...>>  I LOST ANOTHER 2-1/2 POUNDS DURING THANKSGIVING WEEK !! !! !!  Check out the new ticker.... (ALL PRAISES TO HIS NAME)

So, thanks to my little chat with the Lord (see previous post) I'm motivated to start journaling my food again.

Breakfast - 7:30 am
(Dinner tonight is the credit union staff & board of directors Christmas event at Sam Seltzer's Steak House. So I decided to have a little heavy protein at breakfast to hold me over until then.)

    • Smoked Turkey, white and dark meat; the last of the No-Dressing Waldorf Salad (cubed apples, fresh pineapple, red grapes and celery) with the last of the No-Sugar Chopped Cranberry Relish mixed in (contains fresh cranberries, WHOLE oranges including entire rind, and unpeeled apples pulsed in food processor to a med-fine dice.)
    • Cornbread Banzo Biscuits; Skim Milk

My rheumatologist wants me to keep drinking milk for the calcium because of of my joint and bone issues.  However, I have learned some very interesting things about other calcium-rich foods from Internet research.  Dark green leafy veggies contain MUCH more calcium per serving than milk and a MUCH larger percentage of the calcium in the veg is absorbed by your body.  Intersting, huh?  I'll post some info when I get more time.

    Lunch - 2 pm
    • Butter Beans,Turnip greens w/Garlic  :D steamed in a little homemade poultry broth
    • Cornbread Banzo Biscuits; Red Grapes, Iced Tea

Dinner - 8 pm - don't know yet.  Last time I was at Sam Seltzer's, the only thing on the menu that wasn't meat, fried, or drowned in bacon and cream was a small dinner salad.  Maybe they will have a fish selection.  We'll see.  The LORD will provide what I need.

with what i have done for a living for so many years, i have seen people at their worst.....and it NEVER ceases to amaze me how cruel and inconsiderate they can be...........you know what?........due to the tremendous gift of God's holy spirit, we can manage to NOT give them back what they've given us, but THEY will have to answer to Him one day.......and meanwhile the Lord's concern is that we not hurt ourselves by resenting them in any way for their cruelty and so He commands us to pray for them.............maranatha.................. :rose: niki

Thanks, Niki.  You always have words of widsom for me.  You are absolutely right.  Richard and Lindsey Roberts teach that harboring feelings of bitterness, resentment and hostility and anger toward people who have hurt us is the same as drinking poison and expecting the other person to die!

I don't know that I harbor or nurture those harmful thoughts and feelings, but fresh evil crops up so frequently.  The enemy is always there, ready to torment us with his little darts.  But I am guilty of not often doing enough to cast them into the furnace when they do crop up.

Thank you for a freshening of the Holy Spirit, Niki.

Love, Gwen

Thanks, Carrole - I love YOUR enthusiasm for Let's Do Lunch.  :D

Food Journal - Friday Dec. 4 Dec. 5!  LOL - I just realized I didn't forward my watch the extra day at the end of November!  :teeth:

recap of Dinner last night:

WOW - Sam Seltzer's has upgraded their menu dramatically - This is what the Lord, in His goodness, provided for my dinner last night ...
  • Appetizer Mushrooms (fried crust removed); Chicken Soup with peas, carrots onions and corn in a lightly thickened broth (potatoes picked out); Dinner Salad (croutons removed) with Creamy Garlic Ranch dressing on the side
  • Rare Grilled Tuna Steak with Fresh Ginger and Wasabi (was served TWO large steaks, brought one home), Steamed Vegetable Medley (broccoli, cauliflower, yellow carrots, pea pods);
[li]Glass of Merlot; Club Soda with Lime
    • Coffee with Hot Milk for dessert.

I'm gradually learning that trusting in the Lord makes my life infinitely better.  It is not possible to get more attentive and responsive service than our waiter provided last night:

*He discreetly slipped me an extra appetizer plate for me to deposit the bits & pieces I was moving to the side of my plate & he kept the debris removed.
*When I asked, he took care to describe the soup very accurately so I could make an informed choice whether to have it.
*My salad was the only one at the table with the dressing served on the side - we all forgot to ask.
*He persuaded the kitchen to prepare my tuna without the sesame seed crusting.
*He noticed the beverage steward was skipping me and personally refilled my club soda.

I felt so grateful and pampered.  I have never experienced service like this in a neighborhood steak house.  I wanted to slip the waiter an extra tip from me personally, but he disappeared before the dessert course and I didn't see him again.  I'm going to call the restaurant today and see if I can find out his name so I can send him something.

Today

Breakfast - 8 am
  • Apple Pears, Red Grapes, Navel Orange, one slice Smoked Turkey Breast
  • Double shot non-fat Latte

Lunch - Noonish
  • Leftover Grilled Ginger Wasabi Tuna Steak, Seasoned Garlic Greens (with diced smoked turkey leg meat & splash of broth
  • Some kind of Bean Soup I hope to make today, last of the Cornbread Banzo Biscuits, Seltzer with Fresh Lime Wedges

Dinner - ?? Kids are coming home from Sarasota this afternoon.  Hope to make some bean soup this afternoon.

God Bless Us Every One!
Gwen

Hey Doreen - I'm sure you remember the CCECU Credit Union gang.  Jim & Holly A., Pete & Shelly H., Russ & Carole C., Pat W., and Lois B. sat with us at the Christmas party last night.

Due to a LOT of physical therapy, Jim has made a dramatic recovery from all his physical injuries & diseases.  It was SO great to see him bounding around almost like a puppy and back to his sweet, jolly old self.  He looks fabulous, & Holly is as gentle and sweet as ever.

Pete has mostly recovered from his back injurie(s) and Shelly is taking a much-needed week of vacation.  In her capacity as Chief Loan Officer she and Sandra M. have certainly saved my family's finances.  It was wonderful to be able to socialize with them last night.

Russ is recovering from surgery on his left arm (presumably due to repetitive motion injury) and Carole is having trouble with one of her knees, so they haven't square danced in a while.  But they both look as cute as ever.  Every time I see Russ, I marvel at those dimples.

Pat W. is looking skinny and beautiful as usual.  She is always nice to me.  She usually sits with Carol T., who inexplicably never showed up.  Pat won one of the centerpieces they always give away as door prizes.

I don't know if Lois B. was there before you moved.  She is Sandra's senior administrative assistant.  She is a little quiet, but very nice.  That seems to be one of the main requirements for working at the credit union.

This is the first year I can remember when Neil and I DIDN'T win a door prize and I am SO GLAD we didn't.  Usually they are decorative arrangements hand-crafted by Pat. K., but she wasn't able to make them this year due to a death in her family.  So this year they bought these big candy-filled towers of boxes shaped like penguins.  The Lord took good care of me, huh?!

Pat K.'s husband Albert was running around offering to buy drinks for everyone and keeping us all in stitches.  He and Sandra's husband, Dan were joking with me about how we can't remember each others' names from one year to the next.  So as we were leaving, Al yelled across the room to me, "Merry Christmas, DEBBIE!"

Sandra M. is still quietly glamorous, loving and soft-spoken.  It is hard to believe she is the hard-driving CEO of a financial institution!  She is still passionate about personally taking care of all the credit union members, staff and board members  She and Shelly have pulled our bacon out of the fire more than once!  Despite the downturn in the economy and a few surprises by the Fed this year, the CU still pays 100% of employee health insurance and many other benefits, and has had no downsizing, wage reduction or freeze.  Yet Sandra was broken up over the announcement about a reduction in the amount of the employee Christmas bonuses this year, so Neil did it for her in his capacity as board chairman.

My man continues to surprise me.  I rarely see him in a business setting, so I was amazed at how respectable, confident and authoritative he came across when Sandra asked him to say a few words.  Just speaking off the cuff, he cracked a joke to break the ice, hit all the points that needed to be made, broke the news about the bonuses and managed to wrap it up leaving everyone feeling good about life in general.  Although I frequently want to pinch off his head, he can be amazing.  I was very proud of him.

I probably should have put all this into a personal email, but I'm hoping many of the people mentioned will drop in to learn more about Let's Do Lunch and feel welcome when they see their names here!

Love to all,
Gwen

Saturday Dec. 6

B - nothing - busy washing beans & getting them on to cook for some big batches of chili
L - 2:30 pm several Roger Burgers, plain, red grapes, popcorn, iced tea
D - LDL chili - made several different versions.  The one I had for dinner was mostly beans with a little ground turkey breast.  Red grapes popcorn & iced tea.

Sunday Dec. 7

B - Red grapes, coffee
L - Beef & Turkey Breast Chili with lots of meat and pintos.  Red grapes, popcorn & iced tea.  hmmm...sounds familiar
D - Pinto beans, red grapes, popcorn & iced tea ! ! !

Monday Dec. 8

B - 7 am - Large glass skim milk, hot stewed mixed fruit compote.  Munched on red grapes and several batches of popcorn for a few hours while reading a book.  Basically until I made myself sick.  I fell asleep with my head on the table.  Not feeling great.  Didn't sleep well last night.  Went back to bed until late afternoon.  Probably wouldn't have gotten up at all, but I had to help Neil dialyze.

L - nothing

D - Beef, Sausage & Vegetable Stew donated by a friend (THANK YOU VICKIE D!!)  I picked around the zita, eating mostly vegetables and a few pieces of beef.  Left most of the meat and pasta for Neil.  I ran out of fruit (well DUH - I ate 15 pounds of red grapes between Friday night & Monday morning.  I should have made some hot tea & curled up on the couch to keep me out of trouble while he dialyzed, but when I'm stressed & exhausted, my judgement gets shaky.  I had some more LDL chili beans and popcorn that didn't satisfy me, so drank a bunch of iced tea that made me feel sloshy and slightly nauseated.

Then I pretty much lost control.  I must have eaten some of the pasta from Vickie's stew without realizing it, because I went on a bad bread carb binge.  Not a bad binge, but bad bread & sugar.  I ate half of a Pillsbury Grands biscuit with a thick slab of Michelle's canned jellied cranberry sauce.  Then I ate another half biscuit off Neil's plate, from the leftovers he sent back to the kitchen.

Finally was able to stop eating by dragging my laptop into the medical treatment room (former family room   LOL )and distracting myself reading email & Internet Christmas shopping.

It's almost 1 am & I still have to iron a shirt for tomorrow.  Night night all.

Wednesday, Dec. 10

Neil’s dialysis clinic hosts a quarterly breakfast and information sharing meeting at a local restaurant.  I went to that today.  Neil had to work so he couldn’t go.  The meeting is very helpful as it gives dialysis patients, their partners, newbies, and those considering home dialysis a forum for sharing real-life experiences.

Today the focus was on recreational travel for people who need ongoing life-sustaining medical treatments, diabetics, wheelchair users and the visually impaired.  The clinic will ship your dialysis supplies to your destination so you don’t have to drag thousands of pounds of fluids with you.  Cool – huh?  It was really great – it opened my eyes to the potential I have to go on cruises, airplanes & road trips.  I don’t have to stay stuck at home forever.  Now as soon as the finances are in place …  sheesh

I never have to worry about what I will eat when I go into unfamiliar situations.  The Lord always provides LDL foods for me in abundance.  This is what HE provided for me this morning:

Brunch – 10 am
  • Enormous Vegetarian Omelet Skillet filled with at LEAST 10 different LDL vegetables including artichoke hearts, mushrooms, onions, carrots, peppers, pea pods, broccoli, cauliflower, and others I can’t remember.  Every bite was an adventure.  It had a little crumbled feta cheese on top, but no cheese inside.
  • At my request they omitted the bed of home fries and substituted a plate of fresh tomato slices.  The grits and English Muffin were replaced by a huge bowl of fresh fruit.  Several cups of strong coffee with a little lowfat milk; Water

Our God is an awesome God … He reigns from Heaven above … with Wisdom, Power and Love … Our God is an Awesome GOD!

Lunch – 3 pm
  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast seasoned with black pepper, garlic & onion powders & smoked paprika; Chickpea Soup w/Homemade Chicken Stock
  • Steamed Broccoli, Thawed Black, Blue & Raspberries

Dinner - probably nothing.  Could not possibly be hungry.  No dialysis tonight, so will have some Jasmine Tea and try for an early bedtime.

As it turned out, we had visitors so I made Millstone Chocolate Velvet flavored coffee.  They brought me two food gifts from the Christian bookstore - banana bread mix and cream of chicken noodle soup mix.  Why do people give you food gifts when they know you are on a special meal plan?  This poor lady and her husband are heavy smokers and are both battling depression, high blood pressure, asthma, high cholesterol, and horribly high blood sugar numbers.  Like 250 fasting & 520 midday.  I talk to them about Let's Do Lunch all the time and was briefly hopeful she would visit the website for inspiration.

She's an old-fashioned country girl, a tobacco farmer's daughter.  She and hubby LOVE their fried pork and fried taters and fried heavy sweets.
She confided to Neil that she had been power-eating chocolate cake & candy all day.  She was jittering around on the couch, alternately shivering and sweating.  I have talked to her about Let's Do Lunch, encouraged her to make some of our LDL sausage recipes and have taken breakfast dishes to church with her in mind.  I showed her how to make Splenda apples fried in EVOO, and gave her a jar of Stevia to use in her coffee and tea.  She just hollered "I can STILL tell the difference!"  I'm like, "I KNOW you can tell the difference, but doesn't this taste good, too?"  But she is totally resistant to changing her habits.  I'm really praying that they both survive the next few years, because they are my best friends.  This is the kind of thing that keeps me on program more than anything else -- seeing people I love in bondage & destroying their health.

Sad for them, happy the Lord has rescued me.
Love, Gwen

Your post makes my heart sing, Yes, what an awesome God.  Over the years I have sometimes asked for silly things but knew no one else to go to so took it to the Heavenly Father.  He answers my prayers and I'm so thankful.  You are an inspiration to me and I'm so thankful for all you great loving people on this board.

Going to Rachel's (she is 6) ballet recital tonight.  She will only be on the stage for two minutes but grandpa and grandma will be there, good Lord willing, to see her.

Take care Gwen and God bless.

You too, Carrole.  Thanks for the little window into Grandma land!

Can only stay for a minute so I'll get right to work.  I ate so much protein Wednesday for breakfast & lunch that I wasn't hungry for dinner yesterday, or for anything today.  Pretty amazing.

Breakfast - 8 am
  • Marinated Artichoke Hearts - sounds gross, but it's what I wanted
  • Popcorn with smoked paprika, barely a list mist of salt

Lunch - 2 pm
  • Can of Cannelini Beans
  • Popcorn, Lime Seltzer

Dinner - 5 pm
  • Dried apple chips
  • Fresh Red Grapes

Midnight - Chocolate flavored black coffee with orange zest.  Watching movies with Neil & Michelle while trying to finish dialyzing.  They had French Vanilla Hot Chocolate with marshmallows and fruitcake.

Friday, Dec. 12

We are planning to take the kids out for an early dinner at TGI Friday's tonight, so I will probably be having my heavy protein at dinner.  I need to check out their menu online so I can be prepared.  This is how my day is shaping up so far:

Breakfast -- 7:30 am
  • Soft Scrambled Eggs, Canned Cannellini Beans with Roasted Garlic EVOO and Jalepenos
  • Fresh Arugula, Sliced Orange, Seltzer

Those GOYA brand canned beans always have the best bean recipes on the labels.  This one had Argentinian Bean Stew.  I have to do a little ingredient research before I post it.  They always call for prepared Sofrito (fried peppers & onions) and Sazon (has a lot of MSG) with or without Annatto.  I don't buy these prepared products because they contain things I don't want to have, so I need to find recipes for the ingredients in the ingredients!  LOL   :sideways:

Lunch -- Noonish.  Hmm... probably fruit and beans.  Michelle went to the store, so I'm FRUIT-RICH again!  Or I may just get busy working in the house and skip lunch all together.

  • Red Grapes, Popcorn
  • Lime Seltzer

As it turned out, I ate a little bit and took a nap!  LOL  Then I jumped up & whizzed around cleaning house for an hour, rolled through the shower & just made our 6:30 pm reservation at TGIF.  Everyone was STARVED and they dived right into the appetizers.  I asked for a salad before the meal so I could safely munch along with them.  I felt very good about my food choices, but I was disappointed in the food's taste, variety and PRICE.  I am so spoiled by the EXCELLENT Chili's near our house that TGIF was a big letdown.  Food was bland, presentation was bland and the cost was OUTrageous.  For the four of us to each have a small steak and a soft drink, then add two appetizers, a salad and three desserts our check came to a whopping $142.00, with tip.

So the meal wouldn't be totally uninteresting, I decided to be adventurous and ordered a Mojito without any sugar.  I've never had one and always wanted to try it.  It was terrible.  It must have been made from a mix and diluted with tonic or quinine water.  The lime and mint were fresh but the bartender didn't even attempt to smash them.  Oh, well--we ended up not paying for it.  I guess because it was the only thing from the bar they forgot to put it on the check.  When I pointed out the oversight to the waitress she said, "Oh!  Well,  Merry Christmas!"  ha ha

In retrospect, we are not supposed to have rum because it is made from sugar - are we?  Just goes to show - - the Lord lets us know when we step outside His will.

Dinner -- 7-ish
  • Dinner Salad w/ Ranch -dipped tines, Sugarless Mojito I_am_a_BAD_Spammertail
  • 8 oz. Med Rare Flatiron Steak w/Mushroom Glaze, large portion of Steamed Broccoli, large side of Chef's Veggies (steamed broccoli & haricots verts) with a lemon wedge; Coffee with a little lowfat milk.  They had all kinds of espresso after dinner drinks, but they were made from a sugary mix.  They couldn't brew a simple espresso shot/li]

We drove around after dinner looking at Christmas light then went home & had popcorn & hot beverages.  It was a wonderful evening with (part of) the family.

Snack - 10 pm
    [li]Popcorn
  • Chocolate Velvet (artificial flavored) Espresso brewed with a vanilla bean

I finally got my espresso, by golly!

Thanks for the advice, Mary!  I must be learning, because I did exactly what you suggested, then came home & read your message after dinner!

Saturday Dec. 13

Breakfast - none.  Hung out.  Stayed lazy & relaxed.

Lunch - 1:30 pm
  • Canned Cannellini Beans w/ EVOO, garlic & fresh cracked black pepper
  • Red Grapes, Coffee w/ a little lowfat milk

Dinner - 7 pm  At the Mall, Christmas shopping with Michelle & Joe.  Had a great time -- Got all my Christmas shopping done.  Talk about one-stop shopping!  We checked out the new Thai place in the food court:
  • Curry Chicken with Vegetables, Tofu with Zucchini
  • Steamed Cabbage with Mixed Asian Vegetables to replace the rice or noodles.  Water to drink

Had a triple-shot non-fat latte around 5 pm.  It was really cold & windy riding my wheelchair the quarter mile over to the mall.  Even though I was wearing SOCKS with my sandals, I got pretty frosty.  LOL

Okay, I have to ask!  What is Gwennaford short for?  Is that your real name?  A family name?  It is reminiscent of castles and dragons and knights and King Arthur. I looked at it today and saw it through "new" eyes and had to ask.  If its personal, that's fine, I don't have to know.  Just curious. By whatever name, I love ya' anyway.

Pat - It's a nickname, a contraction of my first & last (maiden name) names that my high school girlfriends gave me.  I've used it for so long I never think about it any more.  Thanks for asking, because it brings back pleasurable memories of fun times I had with Duval, Turky and Raisen (misspellings intentional).

Another nickname I treasured from high school was "Haffanerd" (sounds like 'half-a-nerd') which is my maiden name pronounced sort of inside out.
My high school chemistry teacher, Mr. Ward, gave me this name, (believe it or don't--his saying). He was a much-loved institution in the community and everyone clamored to get into his classes.  He was corny and funny, and had cornball sayings, mnemonic catch phrases, and posters to help you remember the hard chemistry stuff.  The best thing of all is he nicknamed every single one of his students every year, and he remembered them from one year to the next.  In his fertile brain he adapted everyone's names into some sort of nickname.  People couldn't wait to get into his classes to receive their nickname.  Mr. Ward kept guest books that kids would sign when they came back to visit him after they had graduated or moved to another school. He had been there about 10 years when I was there and had already filled six spiral notebooks with guests names.

I still remember the seven elements that exist as a twin molecule in the free state (Iodine, Bromine, Oxygen, Chlorine, Hydrogen, Fluorine, and Nitrogen)  because of one of his memory devices: I Broke Old Clyde's Head For Nothing.  Have I ever used this information in real life?  No, but it sounds really cool when I say stuff like, 'I still remember the seven elements that exist as a twin molecule in the free state.' !  LOL

Sunday, Dec. 14

Breakfast - 10 am - Neil was sick all morning, so we couldn't go to Sunday School.  I decided at the last minute to go to church, so Michelle gave me a ride and I slammed down some food in the truck on the way.
  • Grapes
  • Coffee w/nonfat milk

Lunch - 2 pm - (between church sessions) @ Georgie Boy (Greek) Family Restaurant with Joe & Michelle
  • Soft Scrambled Egg Skillet w/ Shaved Gyro Meat, Onions & Peppers, Feta.  I know gyro meat is not a very good LDL choice, but there were only a few ounces sliced over the eggs.  WAY less than you would get in a sandwich, so I think it was the least fattening way to get that taste I've been wanting for weeks.
  • Sliced Tomates and a Sliced Banana substituted for the potatoes & toast.  Water to drink

Dinner - 6 pm
  • Lettuce, Arugula & Tomato Salad w/ Bleu Cheese OTS
  • Popcorn, Seltzer

Snack - 9 pm - Watching Christmas movies with Neil while dialyzing
  • Two Batches Popcorn
  • Fresh Pears & Seltzer
